Test driving temptation

December 19, 2016

If you're lucky, once in your life you'll have a love affair with a true bad boy.

Mine started in 1989 and ended in 1992.

I met JRH at our place of employment. It wasn't like we took one look at each other and turned into animals. Nope. Nothing like that.

It started small. I worked there first. He was the new guy in the yard. He walked into my office and greeted me with a big smile.

"Hey, doll," was his opening volley and from that day on, he always greeted me like that. The other girls in the office snickered but I think they were jealous. That and they didn't understand the connection J and I had. We were country folk. Mountain born and bred. We spoke a different language from the city girls.

Sometime during the summer of 1989, I needed a new kitchen faucet installed. I asked him if he could stop by the house and do it for me. He did, and we sat on the porch and talked until midnight. After that, he'd stop in from time-to-time and we'd talk. By the end of that year, things between us really heated up.

I knew from the start it wasn't forever. What we wanted in life was poles apart. He played hard and drank harder. Not what I want in a mate. But, oh, did the man tempt me, and apparently, I did the same to him. We knew the shortcut into temptation and we took it.

We crammed a lot of fun into a short time. Did I love him? Of course, but being "in love" with him never happened. Even sitting next to him on the porch, I knew. I was restless for something different.

Eventually, he asked me to marry him. I said no. He started to drift away. I was sad, but I understood. Life went on, but I still look back at those few months with a real bad boy and smile. We told each other secrets, you know.

Sometimes a girl has to say "yes" to temptation.

Just Released! Undeniable by KC Kendricks

May 10, 2015
**updated 4/14/21**

About the book:

With a summer storm threatening to ruin his Friday afternoon, Asa Burton packs his briefcase and bolts for home before the driving gets dangerous. On the interstate, stuck behind an accident, he regrets his decision until he sees Ford Weston standing along the side of the road talking to a police officer.

Ford Weston can’t believe his luck, bad and good. First, his car gets clipped on the tail end of an accident, and then none other than Asa Burton pulls over and offers him a ride home. Coming face-to-face with the biggest regret of his life leaves Ford off-balance. He’d screwed up with Asa all those years ago. It was his fault the relationship ended.

Asa can’t believe he’s found Ford again, so why is he angry with himself? Could it be because Ford walked out on him without a word seventeen years ago and he did nothing to stop him? Asa’s sure of only one thing – Fate just handed him the opportunity to win Ford back – and get some answers.

EXCERPT:

“That’s how you moved in on me the first time. I was sitting on the sofa talking to friends and you plopped down beside me. Then you put your arm around me and asked me if I wanted to get naked.”

“I was smooth in those days, wasn’t I?”

Asa laughed. “You were one horny bastard and you were on the prowl.”

He sobered as Ford stroked his cheek with trembling fingers then ran his thumb over his lips.

“Asa, I’d have never jumped you like that if I’d known you were so inexperienced.”

He was surprised to hear the regret in Ford’s voice.

“I was shaking like a leaf in my frat-boy sneakers when I walked out the door with you. You were the answer to my big problem, you know. I was desperate to lose my virginity but just any guy wouldn’t do. I wanted a real stud for the job.”

“I’m glad you chose me.”

Asa set his beer down. It was the second one today he wasn’t going to finish. He turned and put his arms around Ford’s neck. There was one thing he knew would move them past uncertainty.

He pressed his lips to Ford’s.

Ford was still for a moment then his lips parted. Past and present merged for Asa as the memory of those long ago shared kisses blended with the feel of Ford’s warm mouth moving under his. Now was all that mattered. His groin tightened as he shifted forward and Ford went down beneath him.

Never breaking the kiss Asa worked his hands under Ford’s shirt to caress bare skin. His dick swelled full and hard when Ford slipped his hand down the back of his pants to squeeze his ass. Inside him, little muscles twitched with the memory of the first time Ford fucked him, of the burn as Ford went into him. He’d spun into a white-hot heat he’d never found with anyone else. Asa kissed the throbbing vein in Ford’s neck.

“We have too many clothes on.”

Ford stroked the back of his head. “You cut your gorgeous hair.”

“It was time.” Asa raised up enough to look at him. Ford’s pupils had gone wide and black and

Asa wondered if his eyes looked the same. He ran his fingers through Ford’s dark locks.

“I wanted the senior partners to take me seriously. That wasn’t going to happen looking like a wannabe singer in a boy band.”

“I get it, but it really surprises me you’d do it. Are you ready to take this to the bedroom?”

“Oh, yeah. I’ve changed some, Ford.”

“So have I. Let me up.”

“One more for the road.”

“The bedroom - "

Asa cut Ford off as he kissed him. Ford met him, thrusting his tongue in Asa’s mouth in a mock fucking. In response, Asa flexed his hips against Ford’s. He silently damned the layers of fabric between them as the ridge of his erection rode of Ford’s equally hard cock. Asa shifted sideways to drop onto his knees and rock back on his heels.

“Which way?”

“Upstairs."

The passing of that one lover...

December 19, 2013

I suppose, having been with my spouse for twenty years, I shouldn't have some things marked on my calendar. You know - the birthdays of old boyfriends and dates special events happened with them. Like when they won the karate championship. That sort of thing. Maybe it's in bad taste. I don't really know. But there's one notation that pops up on my calendar every year on December 19 that I don't care if my partner knows about. I will not remove it: JRH, 2009.

It was foolish of me to believe old lovers, forever young and virile in my memory, would live forever. Life has proven to me they do not. It's also been proven that to mourn in private silence is unhealthy, yet in this instance that is my lot. Perhaps had I been able to mourn openly I'd be over the loss and this year I know I am not.

You know the story. It's a common one. Thirty or so years ago I met a man.... and we shared so much. The ending isn't one found in a romance novel. He wanted to travel a road I did not and I would not bend. He went one way and I went another. We saw each other, sporadically, and it was enough to know he was happy enough in his choices, one of which I may have forced upon him.

And then a mutual friend delivered the news - he was gone.

It's odd to know I'll never meet him on the road again. I'd gotten used to suddenly looking in my rear view mirror and seeing the grill of his Chevy pickup about three inches from my bumper. He did it just to hear me yell profanities at him and he'd always laugh. I will always miss his grin and the quick kiss on my cheek he always gave me.

Life is full of loss, and it's what we do with those losses that shape and prepare us to handle the next one with more grace. I didn't get to say so many things to him, not even goodbye. I didn't get to tell him I wouldn't forget him and that every year I'd stop and remember the long talks we had and the secrets he told me. It is one of the few regrets I carry.

His passing at the age of forty-nine reminds me to cherish the people I care about and to take the time to tell them they're important to me. I need to say the words as much as they need to hear them. Because I don't want to miss another chance to tell someone I care about them and they matter.
