Another rainy holiday

July 5, 2018

Sometimes I think the gods of weather have too much fun at my expense. Yesterday was a holiday here in the United States - our Independence Day observance. I had such high hopes of a perfectly grilled center cut pork chop, a hope that quickly died when the dark clouds rolled in.

The day started with promise. I actually slept until almost seven a.m. That's quite a rarity for me. I'm usually up by six. Deuce was ready to go do all his outside activities, so I slipped into a t-shirt and went with him. Doggie-mommies need to monitor some of these things, you know.

While Deuce was busy sniffing the perimeter of his yard, I went into the shed and shot the last coat of gloss paint on the second platform rocker - mark one more item off my to-do list. The rocker was quickly followed by tidying my financial empire and cleaning Loki's litter box. The spousal unit was up by then and we decided to check out purchasing a new recliner for him.

We're now the proud owners of a power lift recliner. It's going to be a big help to him. Not only will it not move when he attempts to stand, it will lift and help him get his feet under him. With any luck, Bob's Discount Furniture will deliver it next Tuesday as promised. As we were leaving the store, the heavens opened. We managed to drive out from under the rain and beat it home. There was just enough time to let Deuce out for a quick pee-pee before the rain caught up to us. It rained for the remainder of the day and there went my grilled pork chop for dinner.

It must have put a damper on local firework celebrations, too. I didn't hear many "booms" echoing off the mountain after dark.

For some time now I've wanted to swap my dining room table with a smaller breakfast table I've used in my sewing room. I won't go into the particulars of it. Suffice it to say it was just a notion I had and today was the day I acted. I texted Cousin Dave to help me move the bigger table. As it turned out, he said his oldest daughter was looking for a larger table. He texted her and my problem of what to do with a formal dining room table with two leaves and four big chairs is solved. I'm delighted I can help her out and she didn't have to spend any more than what it will cost her to get a bottle of furniture polish and put a shine on the table and chairs.

And so goes another holiday. It wasn't the quiet day I'd planned. It was a lot better.

Beset by lists, I'm into the cloud

June 18, 2016

I've been a bit slow to embrace the world of Google docs. For my personal stuff, that is. It's been very handy at the day job job where there are several of us exchanging information on a frequent basis. What really convinced me I needed something other than my handy dandy jump drive is the amount of lists I use. I'm beset by lists.

At the day job, I frequently joke, in a semi-serious way, that my brain is like a full glass of water. Every time someone insists on pouring some other piece of information into my brain, something runs out the other side and I never know what until I go looking for it.

So I make lists. When I'm ready to upload a book to the various vendors, I consult a list. When it's time to do a My Sexy Saturday post, or write an article for the Insecure Writer's Support Group, I consult a list. You get the idea. To save myself a lot of time, time being the most precious commodity we have, I utilize lists. By finally putting some of those into the cloud, my life becomes simpler.

Because if one forgets to take one's jump drive to the day job, one is without one's lists.

(It wasn't pretty.)

Will I ever get bold enough to put a work-in-progress into the cloud? Some do, but I don't yet know if I'll be one of them. It's tempting, but it's not a step I'm ready to take. For now, let's see how having my lists in the cloud and at my fingertips works out.

My co-workers are going to be relieved. I just hope they pray the Internet never goes down.

A look back a summer

September 27, 2015

I love everything about autumn. Cooler temps, cleaner air, beautiful colors. I get energized by autumn. It's usually the time of year we do a lot of home and garden projects. Note the word "usually." This year was very different, and I say that with gratitude. As of yesterday, we crossed off another major item on our To Do List and now we will enjoy the fall with little to do except sit on the patio or a porch and sip a beverage.

The projects began back in May with another visit by the tree trimmers and then swapping out a tub for a walk-in shower. It was a necessity for the man of the house and I confess I wasn't sure I was going to like it. I knew I'd adjust but after four months I admit I rather like it. I'd thought I'd have to get a smaller dog, one I could wash in the kitchen sink, but with the walk in shower another Lab is possible. Yes, if any dog wants to sleep on the bed, they must be bathed on a regular basis.

The shower was quickly followed by new shingles on the shed roof, removal of the roof ridge vent on the house and repairing the roof (no more leaks! and no more fucking ridge vents EVER!), new gutters and downspouts, a new sliding glass door for the sunroom, composite deck boards on both front decks, burying a discharge pipe to carry rainwater father away from the house and down the hill, painting the trim on the shed, and lastly, painting the house shutters.

Oh, and don't forget setting up the pool and then taking the pool down. And buying another Charger. And the man's cataract surgeries.

No wonder I'm tired!

Surprise!
My slush fund is down thousands and I don't mind a bit. The money was well spent. Yesterday morning we enjoyed our coffee on the sunroom porch and agreed that, come next summer, we won't have a lot to do. Of course, we know that living in the woods is full of surprises. Mother Nature can drop a surprise big limb in your front yard while you're in the middle of composing a blog.

Next summer will surely bring something. Thankfully, the slush fund should have time to recover by then. And with any luck, we'll be recovered, too.
