A Friendly Neighbor for the Midweek Tease

January 16, 2019
**Updated 4/2/21 - the MidWeek Tease blog hop has been discontinued**

Welcome to another MidWeek Tease blog hop! Does it feel like 2019 is off to a slow start? It does for me. My goal is to pick up some steam and get a wee bit of momentum going. The spousal unit's recovery following neck surgery is progressing ahead of schedule, so I might actually get some words on the page within the next few days.

Be sure to check out all the participating MidWeek Tease blogs at midweektease.blogspot.com,

This week, I've got an excerpt from an older story that has languished on the hard drive. It has been made a pretty thanks to a nifty little program (and a few dollars), and it's ready to go back out into the world.

Soooooo - coming soon - A Friendly Neighbor.

“Thanks for asking me over, Jackson. I’ve, um, noticed you before.”

Jackson met his gaze. “I’m happy to provide good service to my neighbors whenever I can.”

Kyle’s cheeks grew pink. “I’m done with spying on the neighbors.”

“Shucks. I mean, why, since you obviously enjoyed watching me?”

“That wasn’t the real me. I’m a more ‘hands-on’ sort of guy.”

Jackson’s skin prickled. To be honest, he’d hoped the conversation would take a personal turn, but how fast should he cruise Kyle? If he listened to his dick, he was already going too slow, but he’d never let his penis rule him again. Besides, he’d yet to confirm Kyle was gay. Ninety-percent sure still left room for error.

“Yeah, I noticed that about you. I shouldn’t tease you like that. You could have company some night, and they might not like it.”

Kyle snorted. “They’d like you, Jackson.” He lifted his glass and downed the contents.
“Thanks for asking me over, but I need to get to bed. Tomorrow’s a work day.”

“For me too.” He had to bite the bullet and ask Kyle or risk not getting the chance again.
“Would you like to come for dinner some night? Maybe this Saturday?”

“Sure. What can I bring?”

Jackson stammered. He’d not expected Kyle to say yes to dinner without even thinking about it. “W-whatever you like to drink if you don’t like rum.”

“Ah, you’re a rummy. I’ll bring a rum cake too.”

“Excuse me. I need a moment. You bake?”

Kyle laughed as he got to his feet. “No. I’ll go to the bakery around the corner and order one.”

Before Jackson had time to respond, Kyle leaned over and kissed him. Jackson sucked in a deep breath, and the man’s spicy scent exploded in his brain. Those full lips moved over his with skill and promise. Jackson opened his mouth to deepen the kiss, to get a better taste, and Kyle pulled away.

“I’d better go. Goodnight Jackson. I’ll let myself out.”

He wanted to leave? Jackson grabbed Kyle’s hand.

“Whoa. You can’t kiss me like that and then walk out the door.”

“Rushing into bed isn’t the smartest thing two people who just met can do, Jackson.”
Kyle squeezed his hand. “I’m really sorry about that because I got a bad case of stupid happening.”

Jackson stood and backed Kyle against the side of the balcony. He wanted to show Kyle just how easy it would be to get stupid together. He pressed against Kyle, thigh-to-thigh and belly-to-belly, making sure Kyle felt how hard he was. Kyle wrapped his arms around him.

“Maybe I need to reconsider saying goodnight.”

“Damn right you do.” Jackson didn’t wait for a reply as he slanted his lips over Kyle’s. This time Kyle opened and let him in, meeting him boldly. It was Jackson who pulled away.

“I gotta catch my breath.”

“I bet you’ll breathe better in your bedroom.”

Jackson held out his hand as he backed away. “Follow me and we’ll see.”

Kyle grinned and took a step. “So you’re going to lead me astray.”

Jackson put his index finger up to his lips. “Shhh. We don’t say s-t-r-a-y in front of the c-a-t.”

“I’ll be more careful in the future.” Kyle closed the balcony door behind them as Max darted inside. Jackson let go of his hand and pointed toward the dark hall.

“Stay right here until I turn the lights on.” Jackson reached inside the first doorway, and a dim light came on. “Bathroom.”

Kyle took a step closer. Jackson backed up another step and flipped another light switch to turn on a small bedside lamp. “And bedroom.”

“Your place has all the amenities. Booze, mood lighting, a big bed and you.”

ABOUT A FRIENDLY NEIGHBOR

Kyle isn’t a voyeur, but when his sexy neighbor forgets to close his curtains, he finds it difficult to look away. And why should he? It’s just a little harmless fun, and maybe an erotic bit of self-pleasure to balance out the long hours he’s put in on the job lately. Next time, he’ll exercise some self-control and turn away from the too-hot for words spectacle, but just this once he’s determined to let himself enjoy the show.

Jackson might have been offended by his neighbor’s voyeuristic evening had he not taken advantage of the delicious show he unwittingly inspired. Unwilling to let the opportunity to turn a smoldering fantasy into a scorching hot sex life, Jackson invites Kyle over for a drink and is pleasantly surprised to find Kyle is smart, sexy, and someone Jackson wants to get to know—in bed and out.

Eye of the Beholder by KC Kendricks

July 2, 2016
**updated 4/2/21 - the My Sexy Saturday blog hop is no longer operational**

Welcome to another My Sexy Saturday blog hop here at Between the Keys! My Sexy Saturday is the blog hop that every Saturday brings you seven sexy words, sentences, or paragraphs from a wide variety within the romance genre.

This week, I'm happy to have seven sexy paragraphs from Eye of the Beholder. Enjoy!

*_*_*_*_*

I was just about to tuck my toes under the sheet when for no real reason a movement on the other side of the narrow alley drew my attention. I yawned as the lights in the apartment across the way and down a story went out. The lower half of the window rose about six to eight inches and a pair of male hands set a block to keep it from falling closed. The hands, now unseen, pushed the sheer curtains apart to allow what little breeze stirred this night entrance to his room. Naked, he flopped down on his bed, his back arched as he stretched his arms over his head.

Why I didn't crawl between the sheets and go to sleep will forever remain a mystery. I never aspired to be a peeping Tommy. I might watch a little gay porn now and again, but what poor deprived country boy hadn't resorted to the joys of the Internet to get by until they could find a real man? That didn't make me a pervert. Unlike a few of the tricks I'd had since arriving in lower Manhattan, I didn't even like to have sex in public places. But in the blink of an eye I became a voyeur.

I suppose I was surprised to be able to see him so clearly, but I didn’t give it much thought. Hell, who could think? Not me. I could only watch and ache as my cock swelled.

He was beautiful. His face was shrouded in shadow, but the city lights revealed his lean, toned body in all its well-formed splendor, cast in liquid silver. He stretched a second time, and I longed to trail my fingertips over the long lines of his torso. I cupped my balls and settled them in a more comfortable position, then stroked my shaft. Arousal teased my nerve endings before it shrieked through me as the man on the bed ran his hands over his thighs.

The inside of my thighs prickled. I soothed the skin, rubbing gently. The hair on my legs was rough under my palms. Were his thighs dusted with hair, or did he have a darker pelt like mine? I followed his path as he caressed the softer skin where leg blended to hip, sliding my fingertips down the valley and in alongside my sac. My dick throbbed, but until he stroked the dark rod that rested on his pale abdomen, I couldn’t give in to the temptation to reach for relief.

I groaned as the man flipped over onto his belly and wiggled his hips, the perfect muscular mounds of his buttocks alabaster in the starlight. He spread his legs, knees well apart. How could he do that to me?

Was that a movement in the shadows behind him? Heart pounding, I froze, fearing my presence would be detected by this second man, who eased between the man’s open thighs, his sizable boner pointing straight out at my phantom lover’s ass.

Some neighbors share more than others...

Andy Madison is city born and bred. Filling in for a friend at a coffee shop, Andy meets Ben Hardin and sparks fly. They spend a long, lazy Sunday afternoon together to get to know each other, and when they decide to let nature take its course, they go to Ben’s cozy apartment.

Ben’s taking his time becoming acclimated to his new life in the big city. He’s got a great job he loves, he’s making new friends, and his starter apartment has the most incredible views a young man could dream of. Ben’s discovered there’s more to admire than the arts, music and architecture. All he has to do is look out his window and across the narrow alley.

Andy thinks he’s seen it all living in the Big Apple, but what he spies through Ben’s window is something that can only be enjoyed by the eye of the beholder...

New cover reveal - Eye of the Beholder

June 6, 2016

Eye of the Beholder is one of those stories that defies the definition of "category." It's romance, but is it voyeurism? A bit.

Is it hanky-panky in public places? Weeeeell. So the neighbors forgot to close the curtains.

Is it serious? Irreverent? Humorous?

Perhaps it all of the above.

Do you know how hard it was to find a cover model with just the right about of humor mixed with seriousness mixed with sex appeal? And with blue eyes?

I think he's perfect.

Eye of the Beholder will be available sometime this month. Check back here at Between the Keys, or visit my website.

E is for Every Day (A to Z and IWSG)

Day 5
April 6, 2016

Welcome to the first Wednesday of the 2016 A to Z Blogging Challenge and, since it’s the first Wednesday of the month,
 the Insecure Writer’s Support Group.

To explain a bit, the A to Z Blogging Challenge takes place in April. Bloggers follow the alphabet, A to Z, every day except Sundays. So it’s twenty-six blogs in twenty-six days.   This is the SIXTH year I’ve participated in the challenge and I’ve completed every year, one hundred percent, on time.

The Insecure Writer’s Support Group is rather self-explanatory. On the first Wednesday of the month, everyone who has joined the group (the blog hop) posts a blog with some sort of writing wisdom. It can be advice or personal experience as long as it pertains to the art of writing.

So…to combine both, today’s topic is “E is for Every Day.” As in write something every day.

I’ve already touched on this in another A to Z blog. I’ve always questioned the wisdom of hammering it in on novice writers the importance of writing every day. I know we’d like to see each and every “newbie” develop the good work habits necessary to succeed. But, and I zipped over to the folder and counted, I’ve written a total of seventy-seven (77) books under two pseudonyms. That includes eight in partnership with Christianne France.
I did not, and I do not, write something every day.

Each writer has to strike a balance between their passion for writing and everything else in their life. Time is at a premium for all of us. What works for me is this: Be about the business of writing every day.

Every day I do something in regard to my writing life. It may be a character bio, or a plot worksheet. If I have an edit to do, I don’t get anything else done that evening and I don’t beat myself up over it. I may be filling out those blasted publisher forms on a new submission. If it’s a book I’m putting out indie, I may be working on the cover. I might be blogging or doing promo. It varies from day-to-day and that’s just okay. Even if I’m taking some “dithering” time (downtime) on the patio it’s very likely I’m thinking about writing.

To be about the business of writing every day. That’s what works for me.

E is also for Emory from Doors of Time! What sort of writer would I be if I didn't do a little promo?

Doors of Time is available at
Amazon, iTunes/Apple, Barnes and Noble, Kobo,

Eye of the Beholder and blog hops

2014 A to Z Blogging Challenge
A Rural Life
Day 5

Today’s blog, being it publishes on a Saturday, was originally intended to do double duty. Not only is this the first Saturday in the 2014 A to Z Blogging Challenge, it would have been a My Sexy Saturday Saturday. I have a book with an E title which works perfectly except My Sexy Saturday is taking a short hiatus.

In the spirit of the My Sexy Saturday blog hop, here are seven paragraphs from Eye of the Beholder. Our hero, Ben, met the new guy at the local coffee shop just yesterday. This morning, he goes back for more conversation and to see if Andy will go out with him. Andy knows how to flirt, as Ben discovers, and the good news is Andy already likes him a lot. Enjoy!
= = = = = = =

I nibbled at my muffin for a few minutes. Andy was sorta cute. I could invite him to a movie this afternoon and see what he said. It was one sure way to find out which team he batted for. “When do you get off, Andy?”

A smile teased his lips as he cocked his head to the left and raised his eyebrow. “Usually about midnight every night, one way or the other.”

I bet I looked stupid with my mouth hanging open. A wide grin split his face then he laughed, a low, happy sound that said he was pleased to have rendered me speechless. Andy sobered - at least a little.

“Ben, are you attempting to ask me out?”

I gripped my coffee cup for dear life as I gathered my wits. “I’m not sure now. I think you might need to go home and get some sleep.”

He leaned forward and brushed his knuckles across mine. “I don’t like to sleep alone, Ben.”

The smooth, silky way he said my name made me shiver, but I’m sure he intended that I would. Heart thudding unevenly in my chest, I met his gaze.

Thanks for stopping by Between the Keys today as part of the A to Z Blogging Challenge. Have a great weekend! The challenge takes a break every Sunday, so see you Monday with a blog for F (unless I decide to blog tomorrow about Moon Dances).

E is for Eye of the Beholder (KC Kendricks) A to Z Blogging

Day 5 of the 2013 A to Z Blogging Challenge

It's All About the Books

What is in the eye of the beholder? Everything! Even to the A to Z Blogging Challenge. This is the third year I’ve participated in the challenge, and although creating 26 blogs to post in 30 days isn’t any easier this time than last, I hope to once again make it through on time. It takes a lot of organization - but it’s worth all the effort to reconnect with bloggers from last year’s challenge and to meet new people and make new friends.

I’m not sure where my fascination with voyeurism came from. Maybe growing up with television played a part. It’s a media that turns us all into voyeurs of varying degrees. Anyway, I wanted to explore it a bit and see how it could fit into my writing and Eye of the Beholder sprang into being. I think I’ll delve into it again before it’s all said and done, but for now, this story suffices.

What have you seen out your window?

Andy thinks he’s seen it all living in the Big Apple, but what he spies through Ben’s window is something that can only be enjoyed by the eye of the beholder...

INTRO:

I'd chosen to sleep on the side of the bed beside the one and only window in the apartment. It might have made a different decision if the window faced east, but it didn't. I peered out through the streaky glass at the glow of the city lights and wondered if I'd someday make enough money to have a real view. The surprising, and scary, answer to that musing was I actually might. My employer recognized my talent.

I was just about to tuck my toes under the sheet when for no real reason a movement on the other side of the narrow alley drew my attention. I yawned as the lights in the apartment across the way and down a story went out. EXCERPT:

A smile played at his lips as he cocked his head to the left and raised his eyebrow. “Usually about midnight every night, one way or the other.”

The smooth, silky way he said my name made me shiver, but I’m sure he intended that I would. Heart thudding unevenly in my chest, I met his gaze.

“Me neither, Andy, and I happen to be free around midnight.” I didn’t add that if we went to my place I’d make damn sure my curtains were safety-pinned closed.

He leaned forward again. “Tell you what. Give me your cell phone number and I’ll call you when my shift is finally over.”

"That'll work. We can figure out what happens between now and midnight then.”

Andy smiled and shoved the rest of his muffin in his mouth as another customer hustled in out of the rain.

“Be right with you,” he called out as he stood. “I don’t know how long I’ll be, but I’ll call. Swear.”

“I need to head home to make myself all sexy, so you do what you have to do.”

He flashed me a parting grin and slipped behind the counter, then schmoozed with the new arrival. It was in my mind to wait a while before leaving, but the rain suddenly eased. Within minutes, the coffee shop was full of people. I cleared the little table and made a strategic exit. I saw no point in trying to distract him from his work just to say goodbye. A certain level of maturity was called for in these situations, or so I told myself.

On the other hand, I had a hookup for today that had a lot of potential. Andy was a friendly, charming fellow. Maybe I’d end up with a fuck buddy, which would be fine with me. What lonely fellow on his own in the big, bad city couldn’t use one of those from time-to-time?

As predicted, the rain kicked the humidity up yet another notch. Everything from the streetlights to the trees to building canopies dripped, but my trusty umbrella kept my newspaper dry. The apartment was stifling when I opened the door, but then the air conditioning cycled on. I toed off my shoes and settled at the table to finish my almost cold coffee and leaf through the paper. If Andy did call, I didn’t want to spend the entire day in bed.

Unless, of course, he could get it up more times in an afternoon than I was capable of doing. That would be a game changer, not to mention it would impress the hell out of me.

The paper yielded a few possible activities. I circled them, put on a fresh pot of coffee, and took a fast shower. It was almost eleven o’clock when Andy finally called. He wanted to dash home for a shower and suggested we meet at the Port Authority Bus Terminal on 42nd Street at one o’clock.

There was a movie he wanted to see, his treat, then we could get an early dinner, nothing fancy, my treat. After that, we’d see how the evening shaped up. It sounded like a perfect afternoon, and I quickly agreed.

It didn’t take long for me to get nervous. I liked Andy and I didn’t want to screw up a simple date, but what if he was the clingy sort? I wasn’t looking for forever, just a good time tonight. If I got a different vibe from him, I’d have to make my intentions clear without hurting his feelings.

Nothing like getting ahead of myself. Jeez. And to keep from doing it again, I decided to wear a white T-shirt and jeans. Simple, yet sexy, with the message today was about fun.

Or maybe something else was already in the cards.

Andy greeted me with a kiss...
