Heralds of spring

March 31, 2018

I'm hesitant to actually suggest this for fear of the repercussions, but I think spring may have arrived in my neighborhood. From my desk, I can look across the backyard and into the woods. I've spent years planting daffodils in my woods. Many of those clumps are blooming. Most of them need to be dug up and thinned, an easier job now that we have the John Deere.

What pleases me most this year are the little blue snow glories along my lower driveway. I first planted them on the bank in 1981, or maybe it was 1982. Regardless, they've had decades to multiply and finally, this year, put on a grand show. That's the thing about country living. Everything moves at its own pace and we rarely have a say in it. I think it's worth the wait.

Even more telling that spring may finally be here are the little peeper frogs. This past Wednesday night brought a drizzly rain and a deep fog. I stepped outside with Deuce and heard one or two tiny voices in the distance. When I arrived home from bowling last night there were many loud voices. I loved hearing them, being grateful they're still around to sing. I think they have some sort of magic that tells them it's safe to emerge from their winter sleep.

Spring brings a lot of work. We have a lot of yard clean-up to do this season. There are branches down all around the perimeter of the lawn, a lawn which is getting a bit of over-seeding this year. It's time to take the snowblower off the John Deere and get the loader back on it. Yesterday, I put the bistro patio set on the porch outside my office and I can't decide if I like it there. I'll have my mind made up on that by next weekend and can swap things around if I chose.

While we wait for the ground to dry out, we have a few inside projects to complete. There's new flooring for in the bathroom and a fresh coat of paint. That may well lead to new kitchen flooring. Laminate is cheap and easy to change out.

I rescued my late grandmother's set of East Lake platform rockers from my mother's basement and they're getting a fresh coat of paint and new fabric on the seats and backs. Those rockers set in my grandmother's kitchen, one at each window, for decades. When I visited my grandparents, I often found them in the kitchen watching the birds from their respective spots. My grandmother's rocker is replacing the chair in my office and my grandfather's is replacing the rocking chair the spousal unit hangs his "wear again" clothes on. (We need to discuss that habit.)

Yes, there is much to do. It's spring, you know.

Some good advice arrived too late

August 11, 2016

I'd love to be sitting in the shade, under one of the majestic oak trees in my backyard. Truly, I would. There's only one problem with that. It's too hot outside. To stay cool, I'm sitting in my office with the air conditioning on, and the lights off. Am I staying cool? You bet.

I'm also in the midst of an afternoon of staying current with the publishing industry. I consider myself a social media novice, so I ran a search for articles with tips and techniques to get the word out about my books. I'll confess the number of articles the search returned was a string of digits with about a gzillion commas, so no, I didn't read all of them, only a few.

Keeping a presence on social media isn't easy. Blogs, Twitter, facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and oh my God who knows what else. I doubt I could name them all and it's too hot to think about it. Let's just say it's all out there if you have the energy to utilize it.

One recurring theme is to center everything on a website. I've given that one a second, third, heck, maybe even a fortieth look. Do I really want to host Between the Keys on my website? I don't know. How big do I want to allow my website to grow? It already has about seventy-five book pages. Here at Between the Keys, I'm approaching my eight-hundredth blog. Do I want to lose that history? Nope.

I understand the logic behind having everything on one site. If I were just starting out with blogging, I'd heed the advice and set the blog on my .com.

It's a good idea that came my way a few years too late. Moral to the story - I need to make time to read industry-related articles more often.

Fly By Night by KC Kendricks (MSS 125)

January 23, 2016
**Updated 4/2/21 - the My Sexy Saturday blog hop has closed.**

Happy snowy Saturday! If you live on the east coast, from the Carolinas to Boston, I feel your pain! But we can still celebrate the snow with My Sexy Saturday. This week, I'm doing something I rarely do by posting seven sexy paragraphs from an upcoming release, Fly By Night.

Fly By Night is the fifth book in the Sundown saga, Sundown being my sexy smart, albeit bratty, shapeshifter. In this excerpt, Fallon is teasing Sundown with a new word. Sundown then applies it to Fallon's office assistant.

Enjoy!

“I don’t want that to happen, either. I rather like having you all to myself. It makes me feel a little hinky when I think of another Chal's essence being inside your head when we made love.” I opened the passenger door for him as he glared at me.
“Hinky. Hinky. Why do you do this to me? Tell me what is this hinky? Tell me now!”
I slid behind the steering wheel and stuck the key in the ignition switch. “It means something is not quite right, bordering on the unreliable. Or maybe a person is acting a little suspicious. Cops use the word instead of saying we’ve got a sixth sense about something. We say it’s got a hinky feel. Do you understand?”
I started the car and put it in gear as he mulled it over. He didn’t speak until we reached the precinct house.
“Yes. Mon-tee. I have a hinky feeling about Mon-tee.”
“I’ve got that same feeling about shapeshifters, babe.” I grinned at him. “I’ve never encountered anything hinkier.”
He flung his hands up. “Oh, we are finished with this word, Fallon Roxbury. I don’t believe it is a real word and I will confirm this suspicion with Sergeant Mack. He will not misinform me if I have an honest question. Why are you laughing?”

More about FLY BY NIGHT:

Lieutenant Fallon Roxbury has a few secrets. His lover Sundown is a shapeshifter, and his entire Clan is under Fallon’s protection. He can usually handle the job but the universe has conspired to align a few unusual events. A body was found at the old rail yard where the shapeshifters once had a village, the clan’s nestlings are about to mature, and his lover and his police partner are suddenly behaving like best friends.

When the clan elders confirm the identity of the murderer, Fallon has more trouble. The suspect is one of the city commissioners and the evidence points to him killing more than once. It’s up to Fallon to find legally admissible evidence to connect his cold case to the more recent murder. He’ll need some specialized help for that, the kind only Sundown can provide.

Bit by bit Fallon gathers evidence, not only about the murders, but about the secrets Sundown has kept. It’s a sobering reminder that looks can be deceiving, and the shapeshifter he shares his life with isn’t human.

The Sundown saga in order is:

The Back Stairs

Beneath Dark Stars
River Walk
Moon Dances
Fly By Night

The Ghost Makes Three on this My Sexy Saturday

July 1, 2021 update
**The original post contains outdated information. Before her death, author Christiane France and I each took one of our co-written series to manage. I took The Ghost at the B&B series, combining all three books into one. For correct information, please visit https://kckendricks.blogspot.com/p/the-ghost-at-b-by-kc-kendricks-and.html

Thank you!

New release! The Ghost Makes Three is now available at Amber Allure. The Ghost Makes Three is the sequel to The Ghost Wore Denim. It's a joint project with Christiane France. It's kinda cool making up our own ghostly rules as we go along.

So this week for the My Sexy Saturday blob hop, I'm featuring seven sexy paragraphs from The Ghost Makes Three. This is a short exchange between Michael and Robin where they negotiate Robin's tendency to sneak into the bedroom to watch. (Don't make me explain what he watches!)

Enjoy!

“I hear you.” He laughed and backed away. “You’re such a silly boy. In case you haven’t noticed I already am. Dead that is.”

I laughed in spite of myself. He was right. Robin was a ghost and I couldn’t force him to do anything.

“Okay, Robin. You win. I can’t prevent you from spying on Colin and me. All I can do is beg you to be discreet.” I approached him, stopping when we were toe-to-toe. “And absolutely no spying on the guests. Deal?”

For a moment he looked a bit pouty, but then he nodded.

“Shall we shake on it?”

I rolled my eyes. “Right. You don’t have a hand I can grasp.”

“Then what did I just touch you with?”

About the book:

Michael Brooks’ life took an unexpected direction when he found the Taylor mansion, a two-story Colonial perfect for a Bed & Breakfast. An untenured college professor, he suddenly became a successful entrepreneur. And best of all, he met sexy deputy Colin Jefferson and they hit it off in a big way. He’s even made friends with a ghost.

Deputy Colin Jefferson is dedicated to his career and to making a life with Michael. Serving the community he loves, he’s well aware of the stories that tell of the Taylor mansion being haunted. Now he’s living there with Michael and Colin knows the stories are true. There’s a ghost with a penchant for wearing denim lurking in his bedroom.

How the ghost came to live in at the B& B is a mystery Michael and Colin need to solve. It’s the only way for their resident spirit to find eternal rest. Until then, the ghost makes three.

Double Deuce for MSS Thrillers

October 18, 2014
** Updated 4/2/21 - the My Sexy Saturday blog hop has been discontinued.**

A little indulgence if you please, before we get to today's My Sexy Saturday. This date marks eight years being cancer-free for my beloved. I think we'll "celebrate" by doing nothing out of the ordinary. To share a normal day together is the real blessing of being a survivor. And now on to My Sexy Saturday!

Here's seven sexy paragraphs from Double Deuce, the first book in the Ian Coulter's Amethyst Cove series. Look for the latest installment of Ian's story in December. Check out the other half of the Amethyst Cove universe at Christiane France's blog

I bucked him off, then pinned him beneath me. We froze, and I suddenly understood what it meant to fall into someone’s eyes. He licked his lips.

“I know you don’t trust me, Ian, but I’m not out to cause you any harm.”

“That’s an odd statement for a man who’s flat on his back.” I took his mouth, hard, thrusting my tongue into his heat. His knees rose to grip my ribs as he moaned deep in his throat.

It wasn’t an act. No one was that good. I rocked against him, the ridge of my hard cock riding his in a mock fuck. He found the tail of my shirt and pulled it free of my jeans. His big hands moved across my skin, trailing goose bumps over my back. I kissed his neck, finding the soft skin behind his ear.

“This is going to get out of hand.”

His legs dropped from my sides. His voice was hoarse in my ear. “I don’t care. I need this, Ian. I need this so bad.”

The note of pleading in his voice shot though the last of my reservations. The morning would be soon enough to pursue the riddle of Rick Mohr. Tonight, I would ease the man, calm those restless, begging hands and push back whatever demon had hold of him. I rolled off him.
