MidWeek Tease - Kentucky 98 Proof

June 28, 2017
**Updated 4/2/21 - the MidWeek Tease blog hop is closed.**

This week, as part of the MidWeek Tease Blog Hop, I have an excerpt from Kentucky 98 Proof. Enjoy!

EXCERPT

Boone dropped the pickup in gear, gave the powerful four-wheel drive some gas, and swung the nose up the hill before allowing the truck to coast back onto the surface of the lane. He knew better than to try to back out the lane in the snow.

“Can you feel your feet?”

“I’ve got a few pins and needles in my toes, but I’m fine. Honest. And thank you for coming to my rescue.”

“It’s my job.” Boone hoped Carter wasn’t about to get all sappy. He hated sap. It wasn’t manly. He stopped at the end of the lane, glanced at his passenger, and froze.

The blue lights of the dashboards danced in Vic’s glittering gaze as he studied him. That obvious speculation wouldn’t do. He’d prefer to battle his attraction to Vic without Vic correctly concluding he was gay. Getting involved with Carter was out of the question.

He was the sheriff here, with an image and a reputation to uphold. People in Four Points were in a lot of ways traditional - not intolerant, just old-fashioned. Boone wasn’t ready to come out even though he suspected his constituents wouldn’t bat too many eyes, but if he spent a year happily screwing this guy, people would notice.

His was a high-profile position. He respected the badge he wore and the people he served. It didn’t matter how attractive Victor Carter was or that his cock was so stiff it likely had zipper marks embedded in it right now. He’d be damned if he’d throw away a dozen years of hard work just to get his dick sucked. Boone pressed his lips together then snapped at Vic.

“But it’s not my job to keep hauling your ass out of trouble every time I turn around. If you’re gonna be here a year, you’d better figure out a few things, and fast. And the first thing is, when I give you some advice, you need to fucking listen up.”

Vic stared at him for a few short heartbeats. “I’m sorry, Boone. You’re right.”

Boone glared at him. That was too easy. Carter was going to be in trouble every time he turned around. He checked to make sure the pickup was in four-high and third gear and drove forward into the swirling snow.

Give the man credit, Vic didn’t chatter at him while he drove through the squall. Visibility was low and he needed to concentrate. He knew the roads and where the intersections were and he still had difficulty seeing. Carter would have gotten himself well and truly lost driving around the mountain in this weather. Boone slowed as the lighted sign of the motor lodge glowed red in front of him.

“Which room are you in?”

“Last one on the end. Better for the dog.”

Huh. That made sense. Boone took his foot off the gas pedal and drifted into the parking space. Vic jumped out before he had the truck in park, slipped and landed flat on his ass.

The idiot.

Boone cut the engine and climbed out of the cab at a safer speed. With one gloved hand on the front end of the truck he walked around to the passenger side and found Vic leaning against the front tire. “You okay?”

“My pride is severely bruised.”

“I can just imagine.” Boone reached out to give Vic a hand up. As Vic got to his feet he brushed his jeans off.

“Thanks, Boone.”

“You said that. Get inside before your dog starts to bark and the manager yells at me.”

Vic’s gaze seemed focused on the motel office. “I got a coffee pot if you want to come in and warm up.”

Holy mother of … Wouldn’t that be the stupidest thing he’d done in years?

“Sure, Vic. I could do with a cup.”

Who the fuck said that?

Vic looked surprised and straightened. “Ranger needs to…”

Boone recovered a bit of his equilibrium. “I’ll take him around the side of the building. You get your ass inside. I want a good look at your head, and if I say we’re going to the clinic and wake up Doc Martin, you’re not going to argue with me.”

“Yes, sir. I hear you loud and clear.” Vic opened the side door of the pickup and Ranger leaped to the ground. As soon as his paws hit the pavement, he jumped and hit Vic square in the chest. Boone lunged to catch him before he fell again, but ended up in the snow with him. Could this man be more trouble?

“I’m sorry, Boone! Ranger! Leave off!”

“Sorry my ass, Carter. Sorry ain’t good enough for this little misadventure.”

ABOUT KENTUCKY 98 PROOF

Victor Carter knows his grandfather only from a handful of black and white photographs, so his surprise when the man’s will is read is genuine. What’s he going to do with seventy acres on the side of a Kentucky mountain? More importantly, how’s he going to survive living there for a year to satisfy the conditions of the will so he can sell the property? Even worse, it’s not like the hills of Kentucky are teeming with gay companionship.

Boone Mosely is Kentucky born and bred with a proud family heritage he can trace back to his home state’s founding. Following in his uncle’s footsteps, Boone’s in his second term as sheriff of Four Points. He takes the job seriously and doesn’t suffer fools - or crime - in his town.

When city slicker Victor Carter arrives on Shepherd Mountain, Boone knows he’s got a whole new brand of trouble to deal with. And this time, the badge isn’t going to help him at all.

Kentucky 98 Proof on #MSS52

July 26, 2014
**Updated 4/2/21 - the My Sexy Saturday blog hop has ceased operations**

Welcome to another My Sexy Saturday blog hop. This one comes with a big congrats to My Sexy Saturday for being week fifty-two. That's right. The blog hop turns 1-year old today. That's a lot of blogs and a lot of hopping.

Today at Between the Keys we're highlighting a first kiss with seven sexy paragraphs from the best seller Kentucky 98 Proof. Enjoy!

“Why don’t you pick me up and show me the way to Ridgemont?”
Boone snorted. “I thought you’d see it my way.”
Vic grinned and it was like sunshine lighting the room. So what if he was on duty? He closed the distance between them and cupped the back of Vic’s neck, burying his fingers in Vic’s soft hair. Vic’s smile faded into a serious look.
“What do you want, Sheriff?”
Boone managed to swallow but it didn’t ease his dry throat. “Just this for now.” He leaned forward and pressed his lips to Vic’s. Surprise rippled through him as Vic gripped his hips.
The touch spurred Boone on and sent his heart rate soaring. His dick hardened again in a wonderful rush as arousal shot hotly through his groin. He laved Vic’s lips with his tongue, stroking and licking, enticing him to open and let him in. Vic’s lips parted and Boone seized the advantage, thrusting his tongue into Vic’s hot mouth. A startled awareness arced between them as the heat grew in Boone’s belly, torturing him with each burning stroke of Vic’s silky tongue over his. He pulled Vic closer, needing to know if he was as hard. Vic jerked away and stared at him with dazed, dark eyes.
Vic’s emotions flashed across his face. Longing. Arousal. Panic. Aching desperation. It was all there for Boone to see. He did the one thing he didn’t want to do and let his hands fall away

Kentucky 98 Proof on the Seductive Studs & Sirens blog hop

February 8, 2014
**Updated 4/2/21 - the Seductive Studs & Sirens blog hop links have been disabled**

Ranger padded out of the bathroom, toenails clicking softly on the oak floor. Vic pulled his knees to his chest, held his breath, and slid under the water. He could almost float in the tub. He sat up, wiped the water from his eyes, and glared up at the tall man leaning on the doorframe.
“You’re early.”
“You’re not ready.” Boone raised an eyebrow. “But since you’re naked I don’t think I mind much.”
“The washcloth has me covered.”
“Damn. That must be disappointing.”
“It’s a big washcloth.”
Boone snorted. “Wouldn’t cover me.”
Vic flicked water drops at him. “You’re talking yourself into a corner, my friend. You gonna wash my back?” He grinned as the smirk faded from Boone’s face, replaced first by surprise then a glittering interest in his smoky blue gaze.  “Go make yourself useful and check the fire. And close the door.”
The muscles in Boone’s throat worked as he swallowed. “I’d rather climb in the tub with you.”

The Year in Review - A 2013 Writer's Retrospective

December 29, 2013

Like many, I’m amazed another year has passed. My recollections of the year just past tends to blend together in a blur of meetings, appointments, conflicting schedules and myriad responsibilities. That’s not all bad because I like what I do, but here in the long, dark evenings of winter, I wish I’d taken more time to relax and play. I don’t make formal New Year’s resolutions, but perhaps I’ll keep that in mind as we sail into 2014.

I’m a firm believer that to know where you’re going you need to take stock of where you've been. The past and future are what this blog is all about as the present is taking care of itself very nicely.

January saw the release of Desert SnowDesert Snow was an easy story to write. I’d had it in mind for a while and it flowed onto the page. January also launched the new tradition of our Cousin’s Dinner, a more formal quarterly gathering of all us cousins. It gives us a chance to sit down together for a meal on a regular basis. Making time for each other has become more important as we all seem to be busier than ever.

February brought the Snow Moon. They called the storm that went through here Winter Storm Nemo. We had some snow and then rain, but it could have been much, much worse. We were lucky, unlike folks north of us. Catching Fireflies was released in February 2013, and I’ve been wondering if I need to revisit the guys on Ocracoke Island.

March was a quiet month. I prepared for the blogging challenge and did my income taxes, and I didn’t write as much as I would have liked. My sunroom became an impromptu greenhouse as I planted seeds - dill, coriander, green pepper and more.

April has taken on a new meaning in the last few years with the A to Z Blogging Challenge. Twenty-six blogs in twenty-six days going with topics from A to Z. More information about the A to Z Blogging Challenge can be found here. Think it’s easy to blog every day excepts Sundays for an entire month? Ha! I dare ya to do it and no cheating - write real entries!

May was the release month for Deuce of Diamonds, the sequel to Double Deuce. There’s definitely a third installment of Ian and Rick’s story in the works. We made a flying trip south to visit the brother-in-law and I came home with a mild case of strep throat. Luckily I got antibiotics promptly and my vacation wasn’t ruined.

June - my birthday month and Mercury went into retrograde. I still got some writing done but I took some time to work on my genealogy project. We got a small pool, just deep enough to relax and cool off in, and we enjoyed it all summer long.

July was a slow month. I wrote a lot of prose but no book releases. It was one of those stretches where foundations were laid for the future. Thinking about the future convinced me to actually make Twitter part of my daily routine. I now remember to go tweet, but I'm a lost cause with the pictures part of it. Perhaps I'll work on that in 2014. Liking photography, I did what I knew I shouldn't and joined Pinterest. No joke - I set a timer if I'm going to play on Pinterest. My website got an overhaul in July.

August. The release of Kentucky 98 Proof. I knew this book would take off like a rocket and it did. Kentucky 98 Proof was the #1 Bestseller at Amber Quill Press in August and it was on the top ten bestseller list at All Romance eBooks. I went to my roots for this story and the end result was magic.

September was busy. I spent a lot of time on the promo circuit with Kentucky 98 Proof while doing the edits for Station to Station. The month also brought the worst news of the year when a young family member was diagnosed with cancer just before her first wedding anniversary. We know her fight will be difficult, but youth is on her side.

**The following paragraph was updated 4/24/2016**
October found us having a quiet celebration at my house. My partner passed the seven-year mark of being cancer-free. Even as we give thanks and count our blessings we pray for others undergoing treatment. Station to Station released in October and seemed to be well received. I was delighted to have this new installment of the Men of Marionville series available but the truth is I privately think with our cultural focus on the fun sides of Halloween, October is only good for paranormal releases. So if you missed Station to Station in October, now’s the time to circle back and get it.

November 2013 marked the 30th anniversary of my father’s passing. That, coupled with a brutal month at the day job, left me a little tired. Not much writing happened in November, but sometimes it’s important to step back and take a breath while dealing with employer horseshit. Excuse me. Horse manure. No, I was correct the first time. It was all horseshit. I took a good look at my retirement portfolio and upped the ante. I don’t need to buy shoes in 2014. I have enough pairs of heels to last the next three years.

December, finally. There are stories submitted several places and I’m waiting to see if I can expand my horizons in the coming year. Keep your fingers crossed. With any luck, I can spread my wings a bit and take my writing up a step. It's a circular conundrum. If I retire I'll write more but I can't write more until I retire. So in preparation of writing more, I need to get my name into new places. It's a prime example of how interconnected all things are. I hope you’ll stay tuned and see how it goes.

There it is - 2013 in a single blog entry. My sincere thanks for coming along with me in 2013. All in all, it was a great year. I hope the good trends continue.

To you and yours, I wish you a healthy, prosperous and fulfilling New Year.

My Sexy Saturday - Kentucky 98 Proof

September 28, 2013
**updated 4/2/21 - the My Sexy Saturday blog hop is no longer operational**

Happy My Sexy Saturday, the first one of autumn! Thanks for stopping by Between the Keys. This week, I'm posting seven (short) paragraphs from Kentucky 98 Proof you won't find anywhere else on the Internet. The action takes place as Vic is taking a bath to get ready for his first official date with Boone. (Ranger is Vic's dog.) Enjoy!

It was a long time coming

September 17, 2013

Five years ago I rolled the dice and submitted a contemporary gay romance in the 2008 Amber Heat Wave Contest. I figured I had nothing to lose. The congratulatory email came - Surrendered Victory was one of the winners. I was off and running.

Since then I've published thirty books, most of which placed on the monthly Amber Allure Bestseller list. But I didn't have a number one until now.

Yep. That's #1.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!
