Not being a person with a natural leaning toward politics, some of the goings-on in the world of writing baffle me. I have to think pretty hard to figure some of the stuff out, and some of it never does make sense to me. I’m confused why a love story can’t just be a love story. You know…a story about two people meeting, discovering each other, and attempting to join their paths on their journey through this life. Must every story make a political statement?
I guess I’m a big disappointment to the folks that answer, ‘yes’.
I like happy endings. I thought I had one, but maybe I don’t. Fifteen years ago, I was sure I had it, and if I’d ended my life story there, it would have been with the time honored HEA. Would that have made the last decade, with all its trials and tribulations invalid somehow? Does a firm belief in the happily ever after taint my all future tomorrows? Depends on how jaded you are.
To those of us with long-term partners, we’re privileged to see them at their worst. Yes, privileged. When my mate acts like an ass, I see someone no one else ever does. It’s a singular honor bestowed in complete trust that I will not withdraw my love and affection over some meaningless behavior. If you don’t get that about your partner – grow up. You’re not so perfect either.
The stories he could tell on me….but that’s another blog. NOT.
In the quest to write a love story with honest, believable characters, a writer draws on all of life’s experiences. We know shy people who walk around with a chip on their shoulder to cover up the shyness, and people who hide their inner fear, and pain, with outward bravado. And we know kind, caring people with the patience of Job that no amount of stress seems to affect. I bet their partners could tell stories, too.
We are all made unique, thank God. So instead of trying to make political statements with my stories, I choose to make people statements. I hope I portray them with all their bad behaviors, contradictions, and shining moments. Good side, bad side, and human side. Mature, immature, perfect and imperfect all rolled together into one person.
Just like you and me.

The Daily Horoscope Reading
You're in the sweet spot today, and should be able to get your people to follow along just through the power of your personality. It's one of those days when you can start a million different projects!
Hmm. ‘Get my people to follow along.’
That’s my horoscope for June 20, 2009, and it’s not reassuring. ‘Get my people to follow along.’ I can’t even get my dog to follow along, most days. And as for starting a million different projects – oh no. No, no. OH NO. Not gonna happen. I have toooooo many projects started now.
One thing is correct, though. I am in a sweet spot. It’s Saturday, and the spousal unit is contentedly parked in front of the television watching the US Open. Golf is good because, unlike like baseball, it is watched quietly. As a reward for blessed silence, I’m watching the newswires and snagging photos of Tiger in action for my honey’s screensaver.
In the Chronicles of Amber, Roger Zelazny writes, “All roads lead to Amber.” My destinations today are a bit less metaphorical. I can join the golf watching, read a book, write a book, take a nap (that one seems to be winning), or even call up some friends and go frolic at the mall.
Or maybe I’ll just lean back and laze the day away. That would definitely be sweet.

The Cyber Life (June 2009)
Note: The following blog entry is best viewed with tongue firmly in cheek while gently caressing a wine glass with the thumb and middle finger.
Bring it on, Facebook.
No, really. Who needs time to write, anyway?
Back in the day, I learned how to do a basic website. Thank God for software that doesn't ask for a lot html coding. After that, I moved on to LiveJournal. That didn't last long because of Blogger and WordPress. Hey, learn one, learn 'em all, right?
Being two for two (website and blog), why not take on Tom and get a MySpace account? Yeah. Why not?
Um.... those twelve unfinished manuscripts? Hello!
With MySpace in the bag, it was time to get back to writing, so I....
Hey...what's this? You can make your own book trailers and post them to MySpace? And on a website? And on YouTube? And LiveVideo? Cool.
Sooooo, I can now make a book trailer, but who the heck wants to? I have all these ideas for new stories...........
But the current wisdom espouses to the theory MySpace is out and Facebook is in.
Facebook? How hard can it be? How much time can it take away from the writing?
HELLO!!! That growing pile of unfinished manuscripts!!!!
[drumroll please]
I'm learning Facebook. If I ever figure out the url for my page, I'll post it to my mail list. Unless, of course, I come to my senses and actually finish a new manuscript first.
In the meantime, someone keep my publisher and editor away from reading my blog and finding out how badly (oops.. a word ending in 'ly') I'm slacking off.

Come Vacation, Go Vacation
Coming June 7, 2009 - Seducing Light
Yes, the heading may say it all. I’ve been on vacation. It’s a good thing, and a bad thing, for the same reason. Being away from the day job opens endless possibilities.
While I’m grateful that I have a day job to pay the bills and such, having a week off has me hungry for a different, slower, pace of life. Being home has been a true joy. I want to be the Lady of the Manor every day.
On the writing front, I’ve finished a chapter a day, and could have done more. What kept me from it were trips to town, a few household chores, a day trip down through Ashby’s Gap into the Shenandoah Valley, and a serious rainy-day nap. Things that could be accomplished over a longer span of time, if I had time. In any case, this week is a glimpse of days to come.
How lovely it would be to get up each morning and write a chapter while the world wakes around me. Then I could do a few chores, spend some time with my honey, walk the dog. In the heat of the afternoon, write a little more, and call it a day and actually read a book or watch a little television.
Ah, for that perfect world.
It’s not to be, not yet. Monday will come and I’ll be back at the mind-numbingly boring day job, nodding and smiling as people whine at me about how hard they had to work while I was off.
I definitely need a less stressful way to spend my days, and I think writing is it. Only two-thousand, nine hundred odd days to go until I can retire.
****
Update - Seducing Light is available at Amazon.

It's not just another three day weekend
Going back into ancient history, back to when I started my very first blog, I was amazed by the fun of it. That blog, over on Live Journal, is long gone, defunct. A few years have passed, and these days my time is almost too limited to indulge in a good, long blog. Even now, I should be working, preparing my *desk* for the three day weekend, and a weeklong vacation in June, but I'm not.
I drove out to a quiet residential neighborhood on my lunch hour so I could take a thirty-minute walk in the shade. While walking, I was stopped by an elderly couple busily sticking little American flags all along both sides of their brick walkway. The old gent grabbed the tail of my vest and gave me this huge grin. I bet he was a real charmer, back in the day. He charmed me.
But I'm sure you're thinking that some old fellow grabbing a woman by her vest is cause for a good decking. It might have been so under different circumstances. (Trust me, I could take this fellow in a fight.) Being Friday, and the Friday before the Memorial Day holiday, I'm dressed in "casual Friday" garb - dark blue denim shorts that can pass as a split skirt, and a red, white and blue vest decorated with little flags and stars. Now you know why he tugged on my vest and gave me that grin.
It didn't hurt that he called me a "young girl," either. That made me laugh.
The old gent lost a brother in World War II. He was too young to serve, being only twelve when Pearl Harbor was bombed. After WWII, he went to work building airplanes. He's as proud of his country today as he was in 1945.
With all the turmoil and upheaval these days, it can be difficult to be a proud American. Too often I take for granted the liberties enjoyed in my country. I whine and bitch - and forget no one tells me what to do. I'm free to set my own course and pursue that which makes me happy. I tend to think of Memorial Day as a carefree three-day weekend, and not dwell on the cost of having that extra day to indulge my passion for writing.
Maybe Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young said it for my generation when they told us the cost of freedom was buried in the ground. (Sorry to all the legions of studio musicians who played with them over the years. There isn't enough server space to include that list of Who's Who in the Rock World.)
I was just young enough not to realize the political import of what that song was about back in 1970/71. Heck, I didn't get a lot of CCR the first time around either. But I do now, and that's the point.
This Memorial Day weekend, I'll take a few moments to give thanks for those who served, and those who still serve. Politically incorrect to mention prayer or not, I don't care. I'll pray that lives be spared, and families be reunited. And if it can't be that way, I'll pray that we will always remember the ultimate sacrifices made by individuals and families so that we can enjoy something called a three-day weekend.

The Ride
Email is a mixed blessing of my EDJ (endless day job). The annoying pleas for help from co-workers unable to grasp the concept of RUNNING A BACKUP are mixed in with the inane pick-me-ups, raunchy jokes, and the important stuff from my girlfriends. Sometimes my girls are the one sending the jokes and the cutesy slide shows. Doesn’t anyone work at work?
This past week I got a little slideshow called, “The Ride,” which was all about enjoying life. Considering who it was from, I had to watch it because I knew there would be a quiz…..
As I watched the thing play, one screen caught my attention. “Burn the candles, use the good sheets, don’t save it for a special occasion because today is special.” I like that concept.
For me, writing makes my day special. I floundered for a lot of years doing things, hobbies, that I enjoyed, but wasn’t necessarily passionate about. Taking the plunge and writing that first story changed all that. I can’t finish one story without getting ideas for two more. It brings me to my computer every day with an eagerness that was missing in my life. Writing has become the driving force of my “ride.”
Today brings a few of life’s more mundane chores. I’m home, so I have all those small things to do to keep my nest feathered. But after that, I think I’m going to go splurge on something special for my day. I’ve no idea what it is yet, I’ll simply know it when I see it.
And yes, I’m putting my best linens out, all through the house.

How Star Trek convinced me to stay in the RWA
It's true. I'm a member of the Romance Writers of America, and it's membership renewal time again. I don't think they know I'm a member since you sign up under your real name. Since I started my career using a different nom de plume, KC Kendricks isn't listed on their website.
To what I suspect is their horror, my alter ego is, as I have PAN status. Make no mistake, the epublished author is a second class citizen in the eyes of the RWA, and for us to have a listing on the website makes a lot of people cringe.
The last several years has seen the RWA maneuvering to oust the epublished author. Rule after rule is approved to thwart our progress, and yet we persist, and continue to sell books. At one time, the RWA didn't want to consider us to be published authors.
Sorry. Legions of readers buy our epublished stories and we get checks. That makes us published. I begin to suspect we make more than some print only authors - witness the influx of those writers to epublishing along with some big name publishers going e-book.
What's really down and dirty is how the RWA waits until after the renewal period is up and then they slap down the new rules.
As if we don't notice. Tsk. Tsk.
Well, $85 is a lot to shell out for a yearly membership, but I guess I'll do it again. Why? I like the punishment. Just kidding. It's because of Star Trek.
I've been a fan of Star Trek since episode one, which first aired in September 1966. I was nine. I've seen every episode of every series, and every movie. (Yep. Saw the newest Star Trek today and you won’t get spoilers here but you should see it..) And back in the 1980's, I read every book fandom produced. One thing about Trek - you never know what might happen.
The only thing that is carved in stone in Star Trek, is if you're wearing that red security shirt on screen with Captain Kirk, you're gonna die, and probably horribly. Other than that, all bets are off, and you never know. All things are fluid, even space. Even the Borg. Crisis and solutions alike morph out from under you. You never know.
And you never know about the RWA. One day, it may morph into an organization that truly represents its total constituency. I want to still be there when that happens.
What will I have to say then? Well, you never know.

Noodle Confessions
May 7, 2009
I confess.
I shop at the local Dollar Tree. Everything is a buck. What’s not to love? So today I stop in to purchase two noodles.
Noodles – those long foam things that float in the pool. Not that I have a pool. I don’t. These noodles will be employed differently.
Using a very sharp knife, my hubby will create a straight slit down each one and then fit it over the front edge of the bed of his pickup. Why, you ask?
When you haul things like mulch, pea gravel, topsoil, the noodle keeps all that crap from falling down between the cab and bed of the pickup and making a place for rust to lurk.
Wish I could say that was my original idea, but it wasn’t. All I know is I’ve seen it actually work. But I digress.
While at the Dollar Tree, I found a little book about the Ten Rules of Writing. I’ve no idea when it was published as it lacks a copyright, but it does have the original price on it - $14.95 American, $17.50 Canadian.
So for giggles and laughs, and a buck, I brought the book home. With a maximum of twenty-five words per page, it was a quick read.
I’m pleased to report I’ve broken all ten of the rules and I feel really good about doing so.
I’ve talked about the weather, described characters, added a prologue (well, I wrote one, anyway), I’ve used regional dialogue, and yes! I have used exclamation points at will!
Damn! But that makes me feel good!

Tending Our Garden
April 26, 2009
Yesterday evening, my partner and I visited with friends to celebrate the purchase of their first home together. Being from the South, we didn't go empty-handed. The new place is sorely lacking flowers, so we dug the first clump of hosta and took it along. I have more perennials to give them: daylily, astilbe, sedum, yarrow, peony, iris, poppies, Tigerlily. Next spring, the border along their back fence will not be so bare.
Along with the flowers, my hubby made a few birdhouses to give them, and a wine bottle incense burner for their new deck furniture. I think he should make them a bat house, too. I'll even paint it for him. (No need to make bats in belfry jokes. I took care of that 'long about dusk.)
It was nice to sit with them and feel their happiness. Starting over at fifty seems daunting to me, but sometimes it's the only choice a person has. Maybe that's one of the reasons why we like our 'happily ever after/happy for as long we can be" endings. The constant starting over in new relationships, while exhilarating, is also draining.
But having to start over when you've passed those milestone birthdays also gives a person a different perspective. You know yourself a lot better, and so does your partner. "Who's the boss?" no longer matters as much, if at all. You learn to carefully pick and choose your battles, and a pair sneakers and dirty socks left by the recliner for one night is hardly worth noticing much less starting a fight over. (Besides, in my house, if you leave things lay it's at your own risk. We have a Lab and he can't resist old socks.)
I think this is why so many of my characters are a bit older than the norm, more mature. They've pared life down to what is really important, and the cap on the toothpaste ain't it. A pair of socks not making the hamper for six hours while everyone, even the dog, is asleep ain't it. With maturity comes the desire to tend those things that feed the soul - acceptance of others, caring for those you love, kindness in small things, tolerance of the human condition, and most importantly, love.
So this morning I'm going to show a little love and rescue my partner's socks from the dog. Maybe they won't be full of holes, maybe they will be. Whether they end up in the laundry or the trash doesn't matter. What matters is I tend the garden that is our life.
And if I'm ever too tired to get my socks to the hamper for one night, maybe he'll spot them before the dog does and remember that at least I tried to save his, and save mine.

One of the hardest things about writing happens after the story is finished and the contract signed - promoting. Dammit Jim! I'm a writer! Not a reviewer!
Mentioning I planned to read a fellow author's book had an unsuspected consequence. Liking the Steve Earle song, "Copperhead Road," I wanted to read the book by the same title by TD McKinney and Terry Wylis. When one of the authors commented they'd like to know what I thought about the book, okay, I PANICKED.
What if I didn't like it? What if it tanked? What if I couldn't find one good thing to say about it?
DAMMIT JIM!!! I'M A WRITER NOT A REVIEWER!!!!
Sorry. Star Trek moment...
Writer's Angst 102.
Well. I liked the story. It most definitely did NOT tank. I can think of more than one good thing to say about it. Seriously. It's not like anyone is twisting my arm here, you know. It's not like anyone can FORCE me to stay up until midnight to finish a book.
But, I'm not a reviewer. I can't take a point and pick it raw, and I wouldn't anyway. If I didn't like it, I'd just move on without comment. Always better to do that than to say you didn't like a story. That's more than professional courtesy, it's common courtesy. And being from the South, not being courteous about someone elses work would be viewed as simply common.
I read a story to ENJOY it and I enjoyed this story. Getting a second chance to be with the person you love is a favorite theme of mine. To try and "speak" in reviewer, the plot was well thought out, the relationship between the two leads was tender and caring (and sexy as hell)with just the right about of getting together jitters, the writing was well paced, and the story backdrop was vivid and descriptive.
Being a simple kinda girl, let me say simply - GOOD BOOK!!!GOOD JOB!!!
Whew. That wasn't so bad, after all.

Give Me One Night on the Amber Allure March 2009 Top Ten Best Sellers
March 4, 2009
**updated information 6/4/2016**
Having a new release "go live" is both exciting and scary. You never know how a story will be received, or how it will impact the sales of the next one. If you go out on a limb and do something outside the norm, how will readers react to that? And yet, churning out cookie-cutter stories gets boring for everyone. So where is that fine line between too boring and too edgy?
Welcome to Writer's Angst 101.
The results are in! GIVE ME ONE NIGHT was the #6 best seller at Amber Allure in March 2009, its debut month! Yes, I get excited about things like this. So I didn't achieve world peace, but life is about enjoying each tiny victory as they come.

Give Me One Night
Second edition coming soon!
EXCERPT:
The dancer behind him was rubbing his butt, without any protest from Blue Eyes, so how crushed could he be? I finished my water and walked towards him, my gaze never leaving his. He stepped into the throng of dancers, meeting me halfway. We moved easily to the music, our movements mirroring each other. I’d worry about the stupid grin on my face, but his expression matched mine. Our hips swayed closer. Our hands brushed. Blue Eyes turned, shaking his very well-shaped ass at me. I laughed in his ear, pulling him back against me. I was so achingly hard that my resolve to taunt him, to wear him down to a begging blob of gel, almost cracked. He grinned over his shoulder when I licked the rim of his ear.
“Cocky bastard, aren’t you?”
“You’ll have to wait a while to find that out.”
Second edition coming soon!
Blurb:
When passion changes the rules, one more night can alter the future...
On St. Patrick’s Day, Brody O’Connor joins the revelry of the yearly pub crawl, hunting a like-minded man for a night of fun and frolic with no strings attached. When a mystery man in an emerald green shirt engages Brody’s interest, it doesn’t take long for the hunter to become the prey.
Well-matched with his mystery man, Brody regrets his "no strings" approach to a night of shared passion that leaves him hungry for more. The morning after, Evan is gone, as agreed. Brody knows it was a mistake to let him go, and vows to find him.
Evan also never expected to meet someone like Brody. Now Brody wants to change the rules, and Evan decides he’ll give Brody one more night to convince him to stay...
EXCERPT:
My quarry stood at the bar, sipping what appeared to be a soda. I stepped into the whirling lights, planted my feet, squared my shoulders, put my hands on my hips, and waited for him to spot me. It didn’t take long.
He looked me up and down, a slow, lazy appraisal that focused my attention on his face. Then he smiled and lowered his eyelids with a slight nod of his head. In that instant I knew something about him there are no flowery or romantic words for – only gut instinct. He wanted me to fuck him.
My body responded to the knowledge. Arousal snapped through me, sending shivers down my spine. My nipples, sensitive as any girl’s, tingled to the point that the fabric of my sweater rubbing against them became deliciously painful. My cock swelled to its full seven and three quarter inch glory in a single pounding heartbeat.
I’d fuck him until he was limp as a rag doll in less time than that if I could get my hands on him.
His chin lifted, the knowledge of the game joined in his eyes. I gestured for him to join me on the dance floor. He smiled and weaved his way through the crowd in my direction. A dancer whirled between us and I bolted for the door, no doubt in my mind he’d follow.

I made it to my car in time to see him step out the door, pause, and look around. He handed something to the bouncer cum doorman. His keys? He allowed others to drive his Jaguar? The man held stunning, hidden possibilities.
Sure enough, the burly attendant loped across the street and out of my line of sight. Within a minute, the Jag whirled into view and Blue Eyes reclaimed his ride. When he pulled out into the center lane, I steered my car in behind him. The next stop, according to the pub crawl itinerary, was Rumours, and that was good for me. Blue Eyes turned left onto Potomac Street and his turn signal stayed on. I made a sharp left into the alley and the Rumours private rear parking lot.
Rumours was part of my regular circuit. I breezed through the kitchen door like I owned the place, which I did. I held a very modest, and quiet, ten percent of the business and the real estate.

Several of the wait staff yelled friendly profanities at me – and made a few offers. I smiled and waved as I hustled my way through, exiting the kitchen beside the bar. A buddy had the barstool on the end and I shooed him off it with the promise of imminent entertainment.
Thank heavens the chair was right in front of an air vent and a breeze blew from it to cool the mob of revelers. I was sweaty, sticky, and not because the night was at all warm. The bartender handed me a glass of ice water with a lime twist and I gulped down a few swallows.
No more alcohol for me until I got Blue Eyes home.
And speaking of, there he was, just on the other side of the dance floor, smiling at me, one eyebrow cocked up and looking amused. He gestured to me to join him with the same palm up wave of the arm I’d used at Tully’s. I shook my head, lifting my glass to indicate I was thirsty. He clasped his hands over his chest and feigned heartbreak.
Right.

“Are you going to tell me your name?”
I flashed my pearly whites at him. “Just before you come for the first time.”
“Cocky bastard, aren’t you?”

You've Got Mail - A Mailing List, That Is
March 13, 2009
I took the plunge and opened a Yahoo group for a mailing list. I've been bumming space, and now seems like the time to have my own list. Yeah, I know. Just what we all need. Another Yahoo group to subscribe to.

This is a mailing list only - no talk, talk, talk. Yeah, I know. Not a place to hang out during the workday, but we just can't have everything.
So if you want to join to get the news, go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/betweenthekeys , or send an email to betweenthekeys-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
Yep. I kept the Between the Keys name for the mailing list, too. That way, I won't forget.............

Art or content violation?
**Updated April 11, 2016 - Seducing Light has a new cover**
March 12, 2009
I've not been blogging much lately - because I've been writing a lot! It's a good bet when your favorite authors go silent, they're pounding the keyboard. So far, 2009 has been very productive, with two manuscripts completed.
That doesn't mean I started them in 2009, you understand. Pulling words out of the air and putting them on the page in a coherent order isn't always as easy as merely sitting down at ye olde workstation and typing away. I always have a few ideas bouncing around in my mind, and it takes some fancy finger work to figure out which one is "it." This year began with the clear vision of how both those stories worked, so it was easy to flesh them out and wrap them up.
Now I have several more ideas to sort out. First scenes are written, or even first chapters, and while I wait to see what crystallizes into the next book, I play online. I blog, Twitter, Google, read the lists, look for inspiration photos, and I check out MySpace.
MySpace. What a surprise. MySpace deleted the beautiful, beautiful cover Trace gave me for Seducing Light for content. FOR CONTENT!! Two male chests and a movie reel?? (The story is about a photographer and a movie star, by the way.) ** update 11/4/22 I haven't been on MySpace for years and years!**
Get a grip. Get a job. GET A LIFE! Someone who can't practice live and let live must have bitched. That cover is gorgeous, not obscene. Do yourself a favor and check it out.
http://www.kckendricks.com/SeducingLight.html .
Meanwhile, I think I'll go have some ice cream and cool down.
