Keeping oneself amused

April 26, 2025

It's the little things in life that keep me smiling. My 2025 garden is planted. It's raining on the garden. The rain enabled me to burn the brush pile this morning. Driving my car is soooo much fun!  The odometer rolled up a fun number....76543.

And I almost missed it! I pulled into my parking spot beside my house, looked down, and there it was! How close was that to missing it? Pretty close.

Anyway, I found it amusing and thought I'd share it. That's not bad mileage for a 2011 Charger. I think the old girl has more than a few miles left in her, and I'm glad. I don't like making car payments. Even the odd repair is cheaper than a car payment. And the cold hard fact is, I don't plan on replacing her. Considering I live in rural America, and I'm getting older, the best vehicle for me is a "small" pickup. The day may come when I sell the Charger and trade in the Colorado on a newer one. But that day hasn't arrived.

Until then, I'm going to enjoy driving a car that hugs the road and can go fast when I'm in the mood. It's the little things in life.

Working my way to...somewhere

May 26, 2024

Everyone, whether they admit it or not, has thoughts about the "what ifs" in life. We wonder what we would do in a certain scenario. Living with Ron's many health issues that developed over the last several years, I freely admit I spent many a sleepless night pondering the Big Question. What will I do if he dies? The quick answer to the question is that I will carry on.

That's what I've been doing, but it hasn't looked the way I thought it would. I've been doing the outside work for many years - the mowing, weed-whacking, gardening, and managing the firewood. I enjoy being outside and some of what gets done can hardly be called "work." Hopping on the John Deere x370 to mow is a lot of fun. So I say!

Years ago, I started to post short videos on YouTube so that Ron could get a look at what was going on in those areas his power chair couldn't access. He appreciated seeing them on the large screen TV he assured me he NEEDED. (Yes, I had a few private laughs at the man but a big TV is an easy indulgence.)

Now I'm at the point where I'm not sure if I want to continue to post videos. I made one yesterday that was a quick garden tour and a bit of a chat from inside the garden. Will I make more? I don't know. Every day unfolds differently than I plan as I sit and sip the morning cup of coffee.

So here is the video for those who want to see what I look like. Next time, if there is a next time, I'll make sure I'm not all hot and sweaty before I turn the camera on myself! I'll record any "chat" part first and then do the work. And I'll be sure to smile for a good thumbnail. Even an old lady can learn new tricks!

Pesky Promotion Pitfalls

August 16, 2023

If there is one thing I don't like about being a writer in 2023, it's doing promotion. I didn't like it twenty years ago and I like it even less now.

Back then, before Amazon slayed the epublishers, if you had a good website, you did okay. Amazon is no one's friend. It exists to make money, plain and simple. Many, many, many voices have been silenced due to Amazon.

Yahoo used to have groups, as did MSN and Google. They're gone now and we're left with Facebook groups and other social media such as Twitter and YouTube. Doing promotion in the Facebook groups is like navigating several thousand landmine fields.

"Do this, don't do that! Can't you read the signs????"

Don't misunderstand me - there are myriad groups that are really great for promo. Post and go because an author's time is valuable, at least mine is.  Other groups have a lot of rules, which I add to my spreadsheet.

I've mentioned the FB spreadsheet before. It's full of KC shorthand, but it works. I know which book I've promoted and when. I know if it went into review, when it posted, and if it's still pending a month later.

Really, folks. If you're going to review each post, DO IT. My spreadsheet has five worksheets and one page is for groups I've abandoned like a hot potato because I don't have time for nonsense.

In the past week, I've moved ten groups to the abandoned worksheet. It'll save time in the long run. One group removed my first five promo posts but not the sixth (the first was in January so they were spread out). I don't care what the issue was. I simply cut the group out of my rotation.

It's not like I enjoy abandoning a particular group. Sure, the groups are full of other writers, but writers are readers, too. Between October and March, I read at least four books a week. April through September are the outdoor fun months, so I probably read four books a month. The point is, writers read.

And since writers read, I'll stick to posting in the groups that are truly writer-friendly. And on the social media formerly known as Twitter. And YouTube if I can get off my butt long enough to go make a video. Beyond that, I really must figure out what to do with Patreon. But I don't like the idea of having people pay for special treatment.

That's enough whining for today. Promotion needs to happen, but I don't have to enjoy it.

The dilemma of artificial intelligence (AI)

 June 4, 2023

The current WIP stands at about thirteen thousand words and our heroes are about to get friendly, at least sort of friendly. I haven't decided just how friendly they're ready to be, but something will happen. Will it bring them closer or shake them up? That's the point I'm pondering.

I'm "pondering" many things these days. "Ponder" is a word I grew up with, and I don't often hear it used now. People today say they're going to "think about it," but ponder, to country folk, has a deeper meaning. To ponder is to focus on a problem, issue, or question until you understand it from several angles. Pondering takes time and often prayer, prayer being a sort of meditation.

AI, or artificial intelligence, is in the news. The pros and cons of AI is being widely discussed on social media. Hell, Congress is even having discussions about it for all the fucking good that will do. Twitter is lit up with authors discussing and questioning the validity of adding it to their body of work.

If you use Artificial Intelligence to create a short story, poem, novella, or novel, can you claim to have written that piece of work?

If you use AI to create a work of fiction and don't disclose the fact, is that dishonest?

If you use AI to create a work of fiction, who actually owns the copyright? Do you own it or do the creators of the application used own it?

If you use AI to create a work of fiction and then you market the book without owning the copyright, are you in violation of plagiarism laws?

If you use AI to create a work of fiction and it's determined both you and the creators of the application share the copyright, do you then have to share the royalties?

My poor little questions are the tip of the iceberg.

Using AI to create a work of fiction, a love story for example, may not have much impact on society, but what if AI is used to generate works that are marketed as TRUTH? I read the works of Clive Cussler and David Wood, action-adventure stories that contain a smattering of facts to make the story more believable. They market those books as fiction, of course, but what if someone else begins to write in that genre and markets it as a true adventure, one that really happened? What if people believe it really happened and the lie becomes the truth?

Call me a Luddite if you want to, but I'm not at all convinced AI is a good thing. Avarice will taint this thing. I fear the desire some hold to be famous and rich will warp all common sense, casting many into a pit of their own making. The need to be part of the "in crowd" and on the cutting edge has been the downfall of many. Folks, don't hop on any bandwagon until you know for sure where it's headed.

It will be years until the AI fallout is fully recognized. It may not be in my lifetime. But I see one thing as certain. I will be on guard and I will be vigilant about it.

And for now, I'll be adding a note to my copyright notice in every new book that it was NOT created using any AI beyond the inescapable spellchecker.

Was this a call for help?

 March 30, 2023

There is an overwhelming preponderance of evidence on social media that writers are fueled by coffee. I can attest this is at least partially true. My morning routine does not vary.

I get up and let my slippered feet take me to the coffee pot, where I pop a pod in the brewer and press start. Then I shuffle to the door and step outside with Deuce so he can do his outside activities. We come back inside and my coffee is ready for a splash of creamer. Then, and only then, I turn on the computer.

Having a morning routine is a wonderful thing for me. I like a bit of structure to start the day. It gives me a chance to settle into being awake. And yes, first thing in the morning, coffee is the "nectar of the gods."

So, why is there herbal tea in my cup?

Every once in a while I realize I've over-caffeinated myself. It comes on with a few achy joints and tender spots. I notice my heartbeat gets a little jumpy. My bladder goes into overdrive (which is inconvenient as hell!). At that point, I will do two things: 1) stop at ONE cup of coffee or 2) switch off to tea for a day, then decaf for a day. That seems to clear the caffeine back to the level where it doesn't bother me.

So, what's the picture about?

This morning I fixed a cup of tea and set it down on the coaster. Then I had a good laugh at myself because it looks like I'm about ready to call for help because I have tea!

If you can't laugh at yourself, you shouldn't laugh at anyone else.

That fickle darn muse

November 2, 2022

I've been putting the finishing touches on After the Sea Sprite Ball, which is a Rayne Forrest novel. Some of you may know Rayne is my alter ego, writing more traditional het romance. Or whatever they call it these days. It used to be that you needed an author brand for every genre you wrote in, but I don't know if that still applies. I've not paid proper attention to such things. My bad.

I also have a brand spanking new KC book that is as yet untitled. Now that annoys me. I just can't think of a title. Experience tells me that I'll be typing along and a phrase will hit the page and BAM! That's the title. I just hate to wait for that to happen.

Another item I'm making a conscious effort to improve on is promotion. I'm currently concentrating on Facebook groups. It's going well and I've been able to post, on average, once a week in those groups I've joined.

Something I want to do, mostly for myself, is put the Deuce's Day blog into book form. It's a lot of copy and paste to accomplish that, but I think readers may appreciate reading about a dog's life from a dog's point of view. I've been playing with that off and on for a while now, but I'm in the mood to finish up old projects so it may actually get done. I'll put it out there on Kindle Unlimited with a $.99 price tag if someone wants to purchase a copy to keep.

And then The Muse exacted her due. She whispered to me about an old Rayne Forrest book that has languished in the files. Read it, she said. Make a cover for it, she said.

Naturally, I obeyed. I grumbled at first because I have enough going on, but why fight it? It'll only get worse if I do.

When I'm writing, I know the value of taking breaks. When I'm making good progress, I've learned that I can switch off and work on a different project and it's just the sort of break I need. I'm still about the business of writing. Experience has also taught me it all comes together in the end.

Yesterday afternoon, I finalized the cover for what will be the second edition of Step Into Tomorrow. When I'll feel ready to put the story back out in the world, I'm not sure. I know it feels good to bring it back to life.

Now I must insist that The Muse behave herself and let me finalize After the Sea Sprite Ball. The front and end materials are added and I need to do that last read-through. Then I need to work on the untitled KC story. The Muse needs to work with me, not try and pull a fast one.

Aye. Right. We'll have to see how THAT goes.

NaNoWriMo - is it for me?

October 23, 2021

National Novel Writing Month, or NaNoWriMo as its known, encourages authors to write a 50,000-word novel in a month. That's one thousand six hundred sixty-seven words a day that won't get edited away.

Write a book in a month. It can be done. I've done it. I never officially joined in the annual November event, but I've worked within the concept a few times.

Writing is sometimes a mystical thing, at least for me. We're told by "those who know all" that to be a writer we must put our butt in the chair and write something every day. NaNoWriMo buys into that with the goal of fifty thousand words in a month. Goals are generally a good thing to have, but sometimes pulling those words out of the air and getting them on the page can be frustrating. It doesn't always work, or perhaps more correctly, it doesn't always produce quality reading.

I wonder how many people have given up when they don't reach the goal. I worry sometimes us "older" authors have perpetuated some very unkind "rules" to those just starting out. Back in my neophyte days, I was subject to those rules and I bought into them hook, line, and sinker. I definitely took the bait and set the hook, and I think I'm paying for that now.

But just how bad a thing is it if you don't reach a goal that was set by someone else? Just how difficult is it to work under the pressure to create? Can you handle it? You have to answer that for yourself, but my answers are 1) generally doesn't bother me, 2) the older I get the worse it is, and 3) nope.

I truly admire those writers who can consistently churn out a book a month. It takes a lot of discipline to do it. It also takes a lot of time dedicated to the craft. It takes a lot of organization and planning. Google NaNoWriMo and you can find a lot of resources on how to do the prep, etc.

Set the daily/monthly word count aside and that's when I think the real value of NaNoWriMo can be found. If you need to get disciplined or like me re-disciplined, then NaNoWriMo can provide encouragement. There are online resources, communities, and social media that can help.

I can only speak for myself, of course, but discipline is what I lack these days. I have the tools necessary to write a book in a month. I've had them for quite some time. I'm just not putting them into practice. I've let distractions in and they've taken over. I KNOW how to organize, schedule, and execute a workable plan but I'm not doing it.

We all need time to rest - the value of sabbaticals is well documented, but they should at some point end. Even an "old-timer" like me, with seventy books under my belt, can need that little extra push to get motivated.

Will I go on social media and toss my hat into the NaNoWriMo ring? Nope. But I have examined my November calendar and blocked out time for writing and only writing. I have a current work in progress that will benefit greatly from a little discipline on the part of this writer.

Now is the time.

We're having fun now (just joking, it ain't fun)

February 25, 2021

It used to be you could say "shoot me" to explain your level of frustration but it's not safe to do that these days. Too bad because I'm definitely at that point.

Why, you ask?

Yahoo is ending its Site Builder website software. My .com has used Site Builder since 2004, and it couldn't be any easier to use. So OF COURSE they'd do away with it.

They've offered to allow people to keep their website past ending support BUT you will no longer be able to add to it OR make any updates. Yes, it's frustrating.

If I have to learn new software and create an entirely new website from scratch, I will certainly do it someplace less expensive. Not that Yahoo webhosting broke the bank or anything near to it. It's just there are cheaper alternatives out there if I want to keep the .com, and I do.

I haven't made a decision on where to go, but I am going to finish a project I started a l-o-n-g time ago, and that's load book description pages here at Between the Keys. I'll at least have a decent fall-back for when the current website goes down. Check out the menu to the left for portals to information. As of this date, it's a work in progress so you could end up at the .com for the next little bit. But not for long if I can get 'r done.

It was a good run. Seventeen years.

More information when it becomes available.

Intrinsic value

March 3, 2019

Say that something has "intrinsic value" and you may get two different reactions. Some people will smile and nod, and some will give you a blank stare. Intrinsic is quite subjective. Something I think has intrinsic value will have no value of any sort to someone else. Of course, the Internet tells me this little Scottie dog is worth at least $24 on Etsy.

I very much doubt my great-grandparents paid even a penny for this. Carnival glass, or "Iridill," was created by the Fenton company sometime around 1910. Tiffany had a similar process and so the Fenton glass didn't sell for top dollar. That being the case, Fenton discontinued Iridill. The older women in my family possessed a great liking for Fenton and many, many pieces have come to me.

These days Fenton glass, while collectible, isn't a consistent high-dollar value. The odd piece may fetch hundreds, but the research into the pieces I own shows an average value of $20.

So I'm down to the intrinsic value of each. How do you put a monetary value on something that your great-grandmother, grandmother, and mother all touched? I can't. I don't even want to try.

The little Scottie dog is a link to my childhood and to a small, stoop-shoulder woman with long white hair that she tucked up into a traditional Brethren prayer covering (a little white bonnet). She died when I was eleven but I do have strong memories of her.

Today the Scottie sits on the same desk it rested upon in her home. Desk and dog are in my writing office, along with other family items. To the south, through the trees, I can still see the old homeplace, so the Scottie hasn't traveled too far. To me, the connections are comforting.

Intrinsic value.

Beneath Dark Stars by KC Kendricks for the MidWeek Tease

February 7, 2018
**Updated 4/2/21 - the MidWeek blog hop has been discontinued.**

Welcome to the MidWeek Tease blog hop! This week I've got an excerpt from Beneath Dark Stars. Our heroes are a detective and his shapeshifter lover. And he's not your garden variety shapeshifter, either. He's a true shapeshifter, able to take on many forms.

Be sure to check out all the MidWeek Tease blogs using the list at the end of the post. I hope you enjoy the excerpt!

Beneath Dark Stars
Book 2 of the Sundown Saga
Gay romance with a paranormal shift

Have you met a shapeshifter? How would you know?

Fallon Roxbury, seasoned detective and special police consultant, knows that appearances can be deceiving. Trained to gather the clues and arrive at logical conclusions, he fits the puzzle pieces of a situation together to find the truth. But there’s nothing reasonable in Fallon’s attraction to the sexy, secretive shapeshifter called Sundown.

Sundown has studied people all his life. Having his very own human male is all he ever wanted. In Fallon, he’s found a man he can trust with his secrets and reveal his true nature. Keeping Fallon happy is a joyful exercise into which Sundown puts his heart and soul—when he’s not teasing Fallon’s police partner by leaving strange footprints at crime scenes, that is.

Fallon’s new case ties into an old one. At a dead end, he knows it’s time to ask Sundown for a little help. With his special abilities, Sundown can get into places Fallon can’t. All Fallon has to do is figure out a way to prove what he already knows. But what’s a cop to do when the truth takes a shift that’s stranger than fiction?

EXCERPT

With a groan, I collapsed onto him. He let out a loud umpf and, with his surprising strength, flipped me over onto my back. I was too limp to protest even had I wanted to. A satisfied purr vibrated out of him as he snuggled tight against my side. I found his hand, laced my fingers through his, and asked him a question he’d so far avoided answering.

“When are you going to tell me what it’s like for you, Sundown?”

He sighed. “It’s what I wish it to be, Fallon.”

I’d heard that before. He was uncomfortable with my curiosity about what was normal for his kind. It wasn’t like he didn’t trust me, but more I needed to be patient with him for a little longer. I turned my head and kissed his temple.

“I’ll do a little better by you this afternoon, babe. I promise.”

“Now you’re trying to bribe me, are you not? Very well, Fallon. The more pleasure receptors I align for sexual enjoyment, the more intense the experience.”

I had asked, so I confirmed one of my suspicions. “So sometimes you ‘align’ a lot of them, like this morning?”

“Yes. And sometimes, I wish for something different. This afternoon may be one of those times.” His green eyes gleamed warmly above his smile. “You’ll need to spend a lot of time touching me to find them all.”

“Not a problem, babe. Is coffee a problem? I mean, since I’m awake now and all that. And I did stimulate your pleasure receptors for you.”

Without a word, Sundown rolled from the bed and padded off to the bathroom, his footsteps silent on the carpet. The skin he wore for me was quite attractive. Tall and slender, he moved with a controlled grace, each step measured, no effort wasted. His shiny dark hair, green eyes, and full, berry-colored lips were perfect—too perfect if someone looked closely at my shapeshifter lover. I closed my eyes and listened to him move around the apartment, finally reopening them to admire his form as he returned carrying two cups of coffee.

I accepted both mugs until he rejoined me under the sheet, then handed one back to him. I loved these lazy mornings when we the most strenuous thing we had to do was nothing at all. Sundown rubbed his thigh against mine.

“Tell me more about this girl whose killer you seek.”

If I didn’t tell him, he’d chatter at me until I did. It was better to give him the short version and get it over with, even though I knew it would upset his tender heart.

“Maria DeLong’s parents reported her missing ten years ago. She turned up dead four years ago. Someone beat her to death and tossed her body out along Route 17. They carved the letter W into her cheek.”

Sundown grew still and silent. Not for the first time I wondered if his kind had racial memory and could remember those things done to their brethren in the Chal ancient past he refused to discuss with me. His people had been enslaved when they arrived on this world, and that’s all the Chal history I’d gotten out of him.

He drew in a quick, short breath and then blew it out.

“The Chal can help. We are able to go into places where you can not.”

For once, his people would be on my side. “The Elders will sanction that? Right. Tell me another story.”

“I was with the Elders yesterday, apologizing for my actions regarding Sergeant Mack. I have promised them—again—that I will cease to play Sasquatch tricks on him.”

“But did you promise not to play any tricks on him, period, or just the Bigfoot ones?”

He blinked at me, dismay written all over his face. Uh-huh. I had him now. “Chupacabra, perhaps?”

His mouth dropped open. His eyes widened. “That is not me! I’ve never been to Texas!”

A updated cover for Desert Snow

**updated March 29, 2021**

November 12, 2017

The adventure in Photoshop continues!

One of the cool perks of making my own covers is the ability to create a new cover when the original cover begins to annoy me for some reason.

Or I get sucked into reading some article that says two characters on a cover are more effective than one, which is what happened here. Whatever, eh?

I do confess to cheating a bit. I had the cover stock for both these guys in the files. I like the guy in white - what else would someone at a White Party wear? The other man? Let's pretend his shirt is white and he's just standing in a shadow.

The plan was to go back through the blog and update the previous cover on all the posts but I don't think that's going to happen. The most recent ones about Desert Snow are updated and I'm going to let it go with that instead of driving myself crazy. I've done enough of that lately.

Deuce of Diamonds: a sexy reunion

August 20, 2016
**updated 4/2/21 - the My Sexy Saturday blog hop is no longer operational**

Welcome to My Sexy Saturday #155! My Sexy Saturday is a blog hop that brings the reader a sampling of different authors in the romance genre. I like to participate in MSS because 1) it's fun and 2) I get to build a relationship with other authors and 3) it's pretty clear from the bump-up in the number of visitors I get on MSS days that readers like it. Be sure to check out all the blogs using the Linky List below.

This week is about the sexy reunion. Right away I thought about Ian and Rick. They thought they'd never see each other again, but Fate works its magic in strange ways. Here are seven sexy paragraphs from Deuce of Diamonds

_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_

“I need you, Ian.”

The last night he’d spent here, the one before his job in Amethyst Cove was wrapped up, we’d gone to bed and stared at the ceiling. Lying side by side in the dark, we’d not shared our thoughts. I’d regretted not making love one last time, even though I knew at the time he’d made the only decisions he could. Our last kiss had been bittersweet, full of regret and mourning for what would never be. Now it might be if we were both brave enough to reach for it. Was I? I turned my head and found his mouth.

His lips were fever hot, but soft and willing. He held me tighter as my mouth slid over his to taste longing mixed with hesitation. I licked his lips with a slow, deliberate swipe of my tongue, and he let me in. His tongue moved over mine—silky smooth—and the need to have him burst free in my groin. My balls tightened as my cock swelled. I pushed him against the counter and ground my pelvis to his.

Rick’s big hands cupped my ass and held me tight to him, never breaking the kiss. He was equally hard, the firm ridge of his dick bumping and grinding against mine as we mock fucked. Rumbling sounds vibrated through his chest and into mine as the kiss deepened. I needed to breathe, but I’d sooner pass out from lack of oxygen than give up his lips.

There were so many things I wanted to say to him, but none of them mattered. I needed him as much as he did me. The things that we had to say, and they were many, would have to wait until we healed the distance of the last few months.

His lips burned a path down my neck and to my ear. "Ian. Dear God, I've dreamed of you. Been haunted by you."

About Deuce of Diamonds:

Private investigator Ian Coulter has a knack for finding trouble even when he’s minding his own business. Ian’s in the midst of a routine weekly job for movie star client Saylor Blackwood when the man confides he thinks he has a fan turned stalker. Ian stays close to Saylor to observe the people around him and gets an unwelcome shock when FBI agent Rick Mohr contacts him.

Rick Mohr has a problem. Ian’s name just popped up on an FBI watch list. Rick knows it’s guilt by association where Ian is concerned, but what about Blackwood? Rick won’t allow Ian to get dragged into the mix when he’s not involved. For Ian he’ll break whatever confidentiality rule necessary.

It doesn’t take long for Ian and Rick to join forces to clear Ian’s name and get to the bottom of what’s going on in Amethyst Cove, because on or off the case, together is how they work best.

SABRE is on the All Romance eBook best seller list

May 18, 2016
**updated 4/9/21- ARE is now closed**

It's the email every author loves to get. The owner of All Romance eBooks sent notice that SABRE was on the ARE bestseller list. Yep. I did the happy dance!

Even better, SABRE is still climbing the list. Thanks to everyone who purchased a copy!

I'm a little gobsmacked (to steal a phrase from my girlfriend in Scotland). I think every writer hopes to do well and then is surprised when it happens. At least I am.

For more about SABRE, please one of the links below.

L is for Limiting Behaviors

Day 12
April 14, 2016

2016 A to Z Blogging Challenge
It’s All About Time

Welcome! We’re almost to the halfway mark in the 2016 A to Z Blogging Challenge. That’s amazing. This is the sixth year I’ve participated in the challenge. Yes, it may appear on the surface I’m a glutton for punishment, the truth is I think the A to Z is a lot of fun.

*_*_*_*_*

One of the truest things about human behavior is that we can be our own worst enemy. Trust me - I don’t exclude myself from this. In fact, I’m very good at it. Knowing this gives me an edge for keeping it in check.

What are some limiting behaviors? They’re worse than spending an hour a day on Pinterest.  In no particular order, I define my big four limiting behaviors as negativity, giving in to frustration, being jealous of others, and not believing in myself one hundred percent.

Writers, by the very nature of what we do, spend a lot of time alone. It’s easy to fall into one of these limiting behaviors and not be aware of it. It’s easy to become frustrated with a story, proclaim we’ve written crap, and acknowledge our writing “goddess” would never type such tripe.

Wow. Hit all four points in one fell swoop.

I learned early in my writing career that being compared to any other writer is a head game. It happened, and it didn’t take long for me to realize this person was toying with me. Why? You’d have to ask them. All I know is instead of being flattered, I became insecure. And then I realized that may have been the intention.

Take a moment to define your limiting behaviors. You might have to think about it for awhile (I did), but it’s worth doing. You can’t fix a problem if you don’t know what the problem is.

Do it for yourself.

Hmmm..... Someone didn't advertise

December 14, 2015

I confess. I'm an American Muscle car lover. If you read my books, especially Bored, Stroked and Blueprinted, that comes through loud and clear. That doesn't mean I think newer, cleaner cars are worthless. Quite the opposite. I think embracing the future and celebrating our heritage can peacefully co-exist.

I drove down to the Hub City over the weekend to do a little Christmas shopping. It's nice to know the Prime Outlets folk are progressive.

The downside is.... Tesla? In western Maryland? Certainly doesn't appear so.

(Yep, that's my Charger on the edge of the frame.)

ACBW - Brain Games

September 11, 2015

Have you tried doing mturk.com. It's owned by Amazon. My son does it for fun. The pay starts out small (pennies) but as you built up the amount of jobs you take, the pay increases. He did a 2 minute job for .86 cents. You'd have to read the instructions to understand the system, but there's money to be had there for an ambitious person. - Brenda Williamson

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

I never heard of it before so I went and looked. It sounds more like a fun personal challenge than serious money but I can see where signing up and filling in the odd moments while at the day job would be beneficial to my state of mind. It would be better than playing Freecell or Mahjong. I should set up the account and tell Himself to have at it. :)  - KC Kendricks

Circle of Steel by KC Kendricks

August 15, 2015

** My Sexy Saturday was a weekly blog by a group of writing joining together for promotion. It ended in 2017.***

Welcome to Between the Keys! I'm covering a lot of ground today. It's a My Sexy Saturday Saturday for me, the cousin's picnic is today, AND Circle of Steel is to be released sometime this weekend. I don't even want to talk about tomorrow yet!

Ian Coulter's Amethyst Cove series is a complete joy to write. I think Ian and Rick are the best couple I've created. They're human, and flawed, yet perfect for each other. They struggle to make things work but never fail to pull together when the going gets tough.

Circle of Steel is book four for Ian and Rick.

CIRCLE OF STEEL
Now available at AmazoniTunesBarnes and Noble, and Kobo.

Now on to seven sexy boyfriend paragraphs from
Circle of Steel.

There was still a cool edge between us that demanded caution. We were two strong-willed guys and we both knew butting heads was inevitable. It was how we handled the aftermath that would keep us strong. Love, respect and forgiveness were watchwords for us, as was understanding that frequently the frustrations we felt, and the ones that spilled over, were not necessarily with each other, but outside forces.

“Oh, my God. My own bed! I really did die and go to heaven.”

“What a fucking drama queen.” I kicked off my running shoes and peeled out of my shirt before I turned to help him with his sling.

“Ian. What’s that bulge in your jeans?”

“A really big dick, unlike the fake sock in your pants.”

“Now he’s throwing insults—ouch!” He grimaced and cradled his bad arm. He’d let the arm drop to his side too fast.

“Let that be a lesson to you. Pay attention.”

Book IV in Ian Coulter's Amethyst Cove series
CIRCLE OF STEEL
Now available at AmazoniTunesBarnes and Noble, and Kobo.

More about Circle of Steel:

Private investigator Ian Coulter and his FBI partner Rick Mohr work hard and play harder. Making their relationship a priority is a challenge they willingly embrace. Life is better together, and when their cases overlap, it also gets pretty interesting.

An evening stroll turns deadly when a sniper targets Rick. Needing to be with his lover, Ian has to trust Rick’s team with the hunt for the shooter. As Rick heals tensions between the men escalate and some uncomfortable truths are revealed.

Ian gets a break in the case but the sniper proves to be elusive.  With the FBI conducting a manhunt in Amethyst Cove, Ian has to deal with his own man. It’ll take patience and some tough love to heal recent fractures and secure the future he wants with Rick.

G is for Ginger Snaps (and Give Me One Night by KC Kendricks)

April 8, 2015
Day 7

The 2015 A to Z Blogging Challenge
Many Sundry Things

G is for Ginger Snaps
* * *

Once upon a time an author I share a publisher with got snarky on a private author list that she never shared recipes when she could promo a book instead.

Well excuse me. My focus is not that narrow.

For many years I got together with my nearest and dearest friend before Christmas and we baked cookies. We each prepared five different varieties of cookie dough and then we split all ten batches down the middle. I had cookies in the freezer until almost summer! Somewhere along the twelfth or thirteenth year of baking we decided, by mutual agreement, we needed to scale back on some of our holiday revelries and the cookies got dropped in favor of our widening family engagements.

I miss those Sunday afternoons with her, baking and drinking wine…Oh? Didn’t I mention the concurrent wine tasting? My bad.

So for today’s A to Z, that being G-Day, here’s my best friend’s Ginger Snap Cookie recipe. Enjoy!

Ginger Snaps

¾ cup melted Crisco
1 cup white sugar
¼ cup Brier Rabbit or dark molasses
1 egg
2 tsp baking soda
2 cups flour
½ tsp ginger
½ tsp clove
½ tsp salt
1 tsp cinnamon

Liquefy shortening and cool.
Add sugar, syrup, and egg. Beat well.
Add remainder and chill dough overnight.
Form into small balls.
Roll in sugar and place on a cookie sheet, then flatten with fork.
Bake on a greased sheet at 350 for 8 minutes.

For best results, do not double this recipe. Make individual batches.

Once again this year I have to do a little book promo along the way. You won’t know about my books if I don’t tell you about them, right?

G is also for Give Me One Night

Brody O’Connor joins the revelry of the yearly pub crawl hunting a like-minded man for a night of fun and frolic with no strings attached. When a mystery man in an emerald shirt engages Brody’s interest, it doesn’t take long for the hunter to become the prey.

Well-matched with his mystery man, Brody regrets his ‘no strings’ approach to a night of shared passion that leaves him hungry for more. The morning after, Evan is gone as agreed. Brody knows it was a mistake to let him go, and vows to find him.

Evan never expected to meet someone like Brody. Now Brody wants to change the rules, and Evan agrees. He’ll give Brody one more night to convince him to stay.

Ace, Deuce, Trey by KC Kendricks

Ace, Deuce, Trey – the sequel to Deuce of Diamonds
Book #3 in Ian Coulter’s Amethyst Cove series

Available now at Amazon, iTunes, Barnes and Noble, Kobo

About Ace, Deuce, Trey:

Ian Coulter has his hands full with a sexy office assistant, a favorite movie star client and a drag queen determined to save the world one lost runaway at a time. He can juggle all of it because he and his lover, FBI agent Rick Mohr, are finally together.

Rick’s transfer to Amethyst Cove puts him in charge of multiple operations. When one of Ian’s clients is targeted, it doesn’t take long for Ian to suspect the con artist is on an FBI watch list. With their cases overlapping, Ian and Rick are short on time. Together they set a trap and spring it before their suspect escapes.

Doing the job is easy but figuring out the relationship is tougher. Fitting their lives together isn’t without obstacles, but one thing is certain. On or off the case, Ian and Rick always get their man.

*_*_*_*_*

An excerpt from Ace, Deuce, Trey

The description of the Harmon con man was a good match to the pictures we had of Saylor’s accuser. I checked the name of the detective on the Harmon case. I didn’t know him but I’d take the chance and call him to let him know I had a client with a similar situation and see what he said. I’d do what I could to ensure this con artist didn’t make Amethyst Cove his permanent home.

The air around me changed, expanded. I froze and listened into the quiet office. The outside door snicked closed. I drew my Sig Sauer P228 and held it in my lap.

“Hello?”

“It’s me, Ian.”

I laid the gun on my desk. “You should have yelled first.”

It was so quiet I wondered if my mind had played a trick on me.

“What the fuck are you doing, Rick?”

He swaggered into my office. His hot green gaze slammed into mine. “Making sure the blinds are closed.”

I leaned back and put my feet up on my desk. “I have a gun, bucko. What are your intentions?”

Rick reached behind his back, pulled out his Glock .9mm and laid it beside my pistol. “Mine’s bigger than yours.” He leaned over and kissed me. I pulled back.

“Dream on. That must have been one hell of an arrest and booking to get you so worked up.”

“Oh, it was. Law enforcement agents in three countries are going to dance in the street when word gets around.”

I grinned up at him. “And your name is going to be on the report.”

He shook his head. “Not mine, no. I have an alias, you know.”

That was news to me. “Because you’ve done undercover work for the Treasury?”

Rick grasped my ankles and lifted them off my desk. I set my feet on the floor and he went to his knees in front of me.

“And I might have to do it again so my team second gets the credit and the public glory on this one.”

I spread my knees and he slid his big, warm hands up the inside of my thighs to my balls. “You have something in mind here, Mr. FBI man?”

“You don’t have anything to say about the fact I might have to go undercover again?”

I narrowed my eyes. “Something you need to fill me in about?”

“No, no. I’ve let it be known I’m the last option for those assignments.” He pulled my shirttail out of my jeans. “I even told them why.”

“That’s a good career move. ‘I’m gay and I’m shacked up so don’t call me.’ I bet your boss loved that.”

My cock swelled as Rick eased my zipper down. “He laughed at me. In my face. So I beat the shit out of him.”

I snorted. “Right. On the shooting range. What do you think you’re doing?”

He yanked my pants down and all but dragged me out of the chair to the floor. “I’m going to do you in your office, darling. It’ll be a fantasy come true.”

“I’ll scream.” I wiggled my ass to aid him in getting my jeans down and out of the way.

“Yes you will before I’m done with you.”
