It's exhausting!

July 10, 2025

Has the author been writing? No.

Has the author been doing any promo at all? No.

Has the author been doing anything at all? Oh, yeah.

I'm tired. Like, really tired. The garden is doing great, I got the new greenhouse set up, the grass needs mowing every six days, and the Cousin has been topping maple trees. So what's that got to do with writing?

Well, you can't write when you're preserving food from the garden. You can't write while riding a lawn mower. You can't write when you're an assistant lumber jack. It's exhausting!

I'm really not complaining. It's been a very productive couple of weeks - except for writing. And the writing will come soon. I see light at the end of the tunnel. I have two covers made for the two works-in-progress, and that always helps to get me rolling along.

The mess from topping the trees is almost cleared. The wax beans are canned. The mowing? Well, the weather dictates that and it's been happening every six days and that's not typical for my location.

And today, none of that happened. I went along with a girlfriend to hold her hand while she got a new phone. This girl was still using a flip phone. It was time for her to upgrade!

Yes, it's been a busy few weeks and I'm glad of it.

Updates from the Manor

June 10, 2025

I've been busy. Country living isn't all sipping bourbon on the porch. It's constant movement before it's time to sit on the porch (or patio in my case). The other day, I made a little video to show what's been going on lately and posted it.

Making videos started years ago as a way to entertain my late husband. As he lost mobility, I videoed walks with the dogs and areas of the Manor he couldn't access with his power chair. He enjoyed it. And I videoed some of his antics on the tractor.  He requested a video of the professional tree trimmers taking down the leaning maple, so we shot that from the safety of the sunroom porch.

These days making a video is more about a record for myself. Some future me is going to look back and remember that the woman of today did exist. Heck, I need these videos now to prove to my running buddies that THIS WOMAN can really operate a tractor and a chainsaw.

So I made a little video. Go watch it. Subscribe to my channel and help me out. I'll never sneak into the YT algorithm if you don't.

Sometimes it's out of our control

May 15, 2025

It's been an interesting couple of days. There was rain in the forecast, but I didn't pick up on the fact the rain would be a deluge. We got two inches in less than twenty-four hours. That's a lot for us. Some areas just west of our location got even more. The Potomac River is flooding in some spots.

Rain is one thing. Power outages are another. Back in the day, outages were common here. The power blinked every day in the hottest part of summer. Then came the Big Ice Storm of October 29, 2011, and the power company had a massive amount of damage to repair. It seems they were able to make those repairs count because the regular power blinks stopped after that.

Tuesday was a mess. It rained. Boy, did it rain. I'd already emptied about two and a half inches out of the rain gauge and Tuesday brought two more. I kept an eye on the radar. The sump pump cycled a few times and I knew that when the heavy rain hit, around nightfall of course, the pump would cycle about every five minutes. I got the Troy-Built 5500 generator ready and it's a good thing I did.

About nine o'clock I heard a strange thump-boom. The lights flickered not once, but three times. I heard the sound again, and the house went dark. I bolted out the door and started the generator so the sump pump could keep working. I called the power company's emergency line to report the total outage. They gave me an estimated time for the power to be restored - eleven o'clock. At a quarter past eleven, they said it would be one o'clock (that's AM). I let the generator run and listened to the pump cycle.

The generator powers the sump pump, the water pump, areas of the basement, the living room, kitchen, and the master bedroom. I turned on the hall light knowing that when the power was restored, that light would come on and let me know I could shut down the generator. I could watch the Weather Channel's radar map, and my Kindle was fully charged. Deuce and I were doing fine, and Loki slept through it all. I couldn't turn on the computer, but that was okay. I didn't want to take the chance.

At ten minutes to one, I called the power company again. NOW the recording said it would be three o'clock before the power was restored. I no sooner disconnected the call when the hall light popped on. I waited a couple of minutes before I flipped switches and shut down the generator. Halleluiah, I could go to bed! Note that I didn't say I'd go to sleep. It was a while before that happened.

Fast forward to last night and we had a few more power blinks around eleven o'clock. I was concerned but not panicked. The rain had stopped and the sump pump wasn't cycling.

So here we are this morning. It's misty and foggy outside, but all is well inside. The adventures of the last two days were out of my control. I'm grateful to have reached the point in my life where I can roll with these unexpected outages instead of getting angry and driving myself into a fit.

I was prepared for an outage, but I'm pondering how I can be even better prepared. The generator runs great, but as with all mechanical things, it ages. It's over twenty years old and has more than a few hours on it. Now I wonder if I should get a medium sized power bank to run the sump pump, just in case.

Being prepared is not out of my control. I can be proactive, and I'm going to look at a few things this summer and hopefully fine tune my emergency response capabilities. It just makes sense, especially for a woman living alone.

And who knows? Maybe this experience will work its way into a story soon.

The health of this writer

May 5, 2025

Health tips are everywhere. Do this. Do that. Bad. Good. Must. Avoid. I confess to being at the "who gives a fuck" stage with it all. I think all this so-called advice has morphed into how a blogger or a YouTube-r gets more views to generate more income. BETWEEN THE KEYS is not monetized. My opinions are out there for free. This is my blog, a record of my days, my thoughts, my opinions, for what it's all worth. This is who and where I am on this day.

So.... why am I writing about health instead of working on the current WIP?

There was a family gathering this past weekend and talk turned to health. This seems to be a more and more popular topic at these events. I get annoyed when talk turns to glucose levels. People act like they don't believe me when I tell them mine is fine. My grandmother was diabetic and folks seem to think I should be one, too. The reading pictured was taken at about 7:00 AM this morning. It really PISSES ME OFF! Yeah. It does. As soon as I'm finished venting, I'm texting that picture out to a few family members.

Why is this number so important? There is something with glucose levels called the dawn phenomenon. Go look it up. As best I can tell it's got a lot to do with biorhythms and your very smart body preparing you to have enough energy to wake up via the liver making glucose. It's a whole thing.

Now you may wonder why I check my levels on a semi-regular basis. My grandmother was diabetic and I have her genetics. I also have access to more and better information than she ever had. I check my levels to watch for trends.

I've read the articles where sitting all day is considered to be the new smoking when it comes to chronic health problems. I sat behind a desk for most of my working years. Then I came home and sat at the computer to write. I also walked on my lunch breaks and walked the dog after I got home. Now that I'm retired, I'm outside moving around a lot. Being the Lady of the Manor requires a lot of physical activity.

Refined white sugar is the new devil. Carbohydrates are evil. Seed oils sit at the right hand of the fallen angel. Intermittent fasting and a high protein diet will help you live forever! All the hype gets in the way of the truth which is we do need to look closely at those things and be smart about them. My morning coffee demands a pinch of sugar and a glug of cream, so bite me.

I never realized that I practiced intermittent fasting for most of my life. My natural hunger pattern seems to be to want food between ten and eleven in the morning, and then around between five and six in evening. Three meals a day never really worked for me. When I worked, I'd have a cup of yogurt mid-morning and eat supper around five. Maybe I created my rhythm over the years.

What I am changing is carbohydrates. I'm going low-carb. I discovered long ago I feel a lot better if I don't eat carbs with my dinner. No problem. I'm intentional with it now that I'm cooking just for myself (and the dog).

Know thyself. Yes, I want to stay healthy. Yes, I want to avoid the problems my grandmother had. And yes, I want to shove pictures of my healthy glucose numbers up the collective nose of certain family members. Maybe that's the real motivation.

You would think I'd be writing

April 7, 2025

It's not been a typical Monday, at least so far. Being an only child, I have a raft of cousins I'm close to, and I'm grateful for each and every one of them. One of the "outlayers" is a woman who was married to my first cousin, Phil, who died in 1995. She's still family. Her second husband passed a few days ago and his funeral was this morning.

I think it's sad - and somewhat my fault - that I don't see her very often. We went in separate directions after my cousin died, and geography played a part in that. I was happy when she moved back, but we didn't connect very often. And as it turned out, she was caring for her late husband much the same as I had to care for mine. It didn't leave a lot of free time.

Being that the service was slated for ten o'clock, I didn't get anything started this morning. I did a bit of promo on Open Roads and then left the house.

The weather today is abysmal. It's barely forty-five Fahrenheit, and there is a steady drizzle. Nonetheless, I left the service and went to Sam's Club where I promptly blew the grocery budget for this cycle. Oh, well. Shit these things happen.

By the time I got home, took Deuce outside, put the loot away, and finally sat down at the computer, it was pretty obvious that writing wasn't going to happen.

Maybe it's the weather. Maybe it's the lack of stimulation in my life. I don't know what it is, but I lack the impetus to work on any of the stories I have started. It's not that I'm displeased with those stories because it's so far so good with them. No, I think it's this strange phase of my life.

I really need to get past it so I can be happy with myself again. Whatever the hell the problem is, I don't believe it should be an excuse, or a crutch, or a reason to not pursue something I'm good at. Lingering grief? Get over it. Lack of sunshine? Get over it. Too many things that need done? Get organized!

One of these days the from me to me pep talk will kick in.

Another step forward

March 16, 2025

So I got a new phone.

Why is this news? Because it means I finally had Ron's phone disconnected. I will no longer be able to dial his old number and hear his voice. This was hard to do.

Yes, I paid the extra money to keep his phone active for the past year. My money and my choice. Maybe someday those among you who haven't yet lived through such loss will understand because the big loss will come, be it parent, spouse, child, or sibling. No one gets an exemption.

I didn't get the best phone on the market. I don't need it. My phone is my PHONE. I talk, text, take pictures and videos (of the dog), and I check the weather. I don't find struggling to read on such a small screen enjoyable. I much prefer the computer for actual work. I do tend to compartmentalize my life, and work is done at my desk with two large monitors.

Figuring out the new phone has been frustrating. Even YouTube only got me so far. The good news is that I'm getting there. I figured out how to turn the volume and brightness up - yea! The bad news is I ended up setting new passwords all over the place. This did not make me happy, but Google knew it wasn't talking to my old phone and wanted to make sure I'd not been hacked. It was a mess because there is me me and writer me on the same devices. Someone at Google doesn't get it.

A new phone means a new case for said phone, so off I went to Amazon. There were too many choices and I likely made the wrong one. We'll see later today when Big A arrives. Why they run a truck all the way out here instead of mailing the case I'll never know. Obviously a thin cell phone case would fit in the mailbox. I doesn't make any sense to me since I live waaaaay out in the boondocks. And living waaaaay out here is why I use Amazon instead of driving twenty miles to the nearest shopping center every week. But I digress...

I'm usually pretty hard on myself when decisions involve my emotions. I tell myself it's silly to be sad over a necessary business decision. I know the truth in that. Ron's voice has been gone for almost a year. Letting go of a mechanical facsimile is a logical step, yet grief knows little of logic.

I went to the cell phone store first thing in the morning and I was exhausted the rest of the day. But this morning, two days later, I picked up the new phone to check the weather forecast and I knew everything on the phone front was okay.

We move forward step by step, and it seems I've taken a few more.

Thanksgiving 2024 - my first as a widow

November 28, 2024

Being it's the 28th of the month, this day is the latest day of the month on which Thanksgiving can fall. That's your trivia for the day.

This is the first Thanksgiving since Ron passed. We had reached the point where time and his declining health brought a quiet to our holidays. Our parents were gone, in one fashion or another, and it was difficult for him to navigate someone else's home. We fixed our Thanksgiving dinner and ate when it was ready. No deadlines. No stress. Just us. And we liked it.

I'm going to his sister's house in just a few hours. It will be filled with her blended family and it will be noisy. It's raining, but I'll park well below her driveway so I can make a speedy getaway. I appreciate being included as part of her family, but it will be very hard to be there without Ron.

But I think of the milestones already passed. I've been sleeping alone for over a year already. He'd stopped sleeping in the bed because when he laid down, he coughed too much. His recliner was more comfortable. It's been a year since we knew something was seriously wrong and his last journey began its slow walk to the inevitable conclusion we all will face.

The family holidays will never look the same to me. It's the way of life, but I don't have to like it. I'm grateful not to have been forgotten and yet I know that day will come.

Seven years ago I penned a poem on Thanksgiving. Here's the link if you want to view it. We never know the future, and we can only view the past through an unchangeable lens.

I miss Ron but he is forever with me. My life is forever changed, but I still believe it's a good life and every day is both adventure and gift.

Being busy is fine, but this is ridiculous!

November 7, 2024

Whewww. Taking care of my little homestead on my own is proving to be time consuming. I've been in autumn leaf hell for the past several weeks. It's me against them, and they are winning! If I didn't keep after the areas where there is grass, my entire place would be carpeted like the wooded areas. I won't mess with the wooded areas, though. The fallen leaves will feed the trees they came from, supplying nitrogen back to the soil. The leaves I chop up with mower do the same thing for the grass only faster for being cut up in smaller pieces.

Yesterday, my cousin changed the oil in the John Deere 1023. Earlier in the week, we began to split firewood for 2025-26. That will be an ongoing project until what we have available to split is stacked. The chimney sweep has been here, and I've filled the firewood racks just inside the basement door.

I think the fall chores are winding down. You'll note I've said nothing about getting any writing down. Heck, I haven't even had time and energy to blog and keep Between the Keys up-to-date.

And let's toss the fall time change in there. Yeah, that's fun. I'd much rather have the daylight in the afternoon. It's difficult to work in the dark.

I tell myself I won't get any writing done if I don't sit at the computer and open the file. This is a true thing. If I'd open the file and leave it up, I'd be more likely to work on it throughout the day. Should I resolve to do better? Or should I acknowledge that Ron's death has affected me on such a deep level I have no enthusiasm for anything other than those things necessary to live through the coming winter?

Medicating myself is not the answer. My mother suffers from Alzheimer's Disease. She is the only person I know of in our family to fall victim to this malady. How is this possible? I don't know. What I do know is she took anti-depressants for years. I will not. I will plow forward as best I can at this time in my life.

I knew this first year would be a time of adjustment. I just didn't expect I would be so completely swamped by autumn leaves.

Working my way to...somewhere

May 26, 2024

Everyone, whether they admit it or not, has thoughts about the "what ifs" in life. We wonder what we would do in a certain scenario. Living with Ron's many health issues that developed over the last several years, I freely admit I spent many a sleepless night pondering the Big Question. What will I do if he dies? The quick answer to the question is that I will carry on.

That's what I've been doing, but it hasn't looked the way I thought it would. I've been doing the outside work for many years - the mowing, weed-whacking, gardening, and managing the firewood. I enjoy being outside and some of what gets done can hardly be called "work." Hopping on the John Deere x370 to mow is a lot of fun. So I say!

Years ago, I started to post short videos on YouTube so that Ron could get a look at what was going on in those areas his power chair couldn't access. He appreciated seeing them on the large screen TV he assured me he NEEDED. (Yes, I had a few private laughs at the man but a big TV is an easy indulgence.)

Now I'm at the point where I'm not sure if I want to continue to post videos. I made one yesterday that was a quick garden tour and a bit of a chat from inside the garden. Will I make more? I don't know. Every day unfolds differently than I plan as I sit and sip the morning cup of coffee.

So here is the video for those who want to see what I look like. Next time, if there is a next time, I'll make sure I'm not all hot and sweaty before I turn the camera on myself! I'll record any "chat" part first and then do the work. And I'll be sure to smile for a good thumbnail. Even an old lady can learn new tricks!

Do I feel the way I'm supposed to feel?

April 27, 2024

Some dates burn themselves onto our souls. For me, March 30, 2024, is one of them. That's the day Ron died. How was I supposed to feel at his passing? How am I supposed to feel today, almost a month later?

The late Jim Morrison (of The Doors) penned some lyrics way back in 1967, or thereabout, that seem apropos to the way I feel today. I mentioned these words in a previous post, but I can't get them out of my head.

Strange days have found us and through their strange hours
We linger alone, bodies confused, memories misused
As we run from the day to a strange night of stone

Back in January, I thought my strange days would pass, but instead, they got stranger. My indestructible Ron, who had triumphed over every adversity, passed away. A cancer we didn't know he had took him. How am I supposed to feel about that?

Getting in touch with myself is on my mind. Who will I be now that Ron is gone? Being single is something I've done before. Being a "widow" is not. What's a widow supposed to do? WHO is a widow supposed to be? Who am I after thirty years of being Ron's queen? And he did treat me like a queen. He and I alone together were people no one else got to see and we liked it that way. I will never be that woman again. She is gone, already faded from memory.

My future is a blank canvas. I can paint it with all the colors of my choosing without heeding the suggestions of others. Who I will be is up to me. Society will view me as a widow, as partner-less, but that's not the full story. Ron will always be with me. His counsel was timeless, ageless, and I'm only physically alone.

Should I sit home and mourn him? He constantly encouraged me to go with friends to those places his disability prevented him from accompanying me. He wanted me to experience life even when he could not. He was not a jealous man, but a generous one.

I can't be the grieving widow who sits home alone. I may become one of those crazy widows with multiple pets, however. No, I will be home when I want to be home, and out in the world when I want to be out in the world. My vision of "widowhood" allows me to be who I want to be and do what I want to do. Those are the decisions I need to make, day-by-day, and they will be my own.

Is that the way I'm supposed to feel? It's the way I DO feel.

You're on candid trail cam!

December 6, 2023

Yesterday I posted over at Holly Tree Manor, showing a picture of me captured by one of the trail cams. I was asked to share it here, too, since as the post says, it's proof I'm not an AI creation.

See the post at HTM here

_*_*_*_*_*_

It's always a good thing if you can laugh at yourself, or at least shake your head and mutter.

The weather today left a lot to be desired. Gray skies, dreary. A definite winter bite in the breeze. It was a good day to pull a heavy sweatshirt out of the drawer and layer it with a turtleneck.

Can you even buy a turtleneck these days?

If you needed positive proof The Lady of the Manor exists, here it is. I have several trail cams now and it's difficult to walk around the yard and not trip one of them.

Those windows you see in the background are the windows in my sunroom office. I was peacefully working at the computer when I heard a ruckus over my left shoulder. Of course, it was Loki. He'd chased a squirrel over the woodpile and somehow managed to catch it. I went out and convinced him to let the poor squirrel go. It scurried off, I'm happy to report.

So there you have it. The fingers that pound on the keyboard are really attached to a person and not to some AI-generated fake.

And the sweatshirt? Yep. It's an old one from the 1990s. It's got Terry LaBonte's #5 racecar on it. It's warm, too!

Christmas-themed stories

November 30, 2023

It's the time of year when Christmas-themed stories flood the romance market. I went looking for a new read last evening and my search for "contemporary gay romance" yielded two pages of nothing but holiday stories.  Don't get me wrong, some of them are really good. Then again, some of them are not. I've read a few that I sensed were rushed through to meet a holiday deadline. That's the very reason I haven't done one. I don't want to rush it, yet if the season isn't upon us, I don't have the connection I need to the story.

Then there is the possibility of such a book having a very limited shelf life. Would one leave the book on sale for the entire year, or pull it at the end of December and then re-publish it the next mid-November?

So much of this time of the year is like that - limited shelf life. I debated about sending Christmas cards this year and decided to simply cut back and send only to those who, like me, still embrace the tradition. But as much as I like the tradition, it may be time for me to let go of it. Prices have increased. Postage has increased. The cards themselves become landfill fodder.

I am in no way saying holiday-themed stories are bad. I'm not saying we should avoid buying and reading them. I'm saying as writers, we need to make sure our Christmas stories have substance, that we don't rush to finish them. We need to assign the same worth to a holiday story as we do all of our stories. Chopping off the story in the middle of chapter three because we MUST get the book out doesn't help us in the long run. Readers are savvy. They can tell.

Do yourself a favor and make sure your Christmas-themed story has a good shelf life. It's fine to start it this season while you've got the holiday spirit, and not have it published until next season. You owe it to yourself to create a story that will last for many holidays to come.

Pesky Promotion Pitfalls

August 16, 2023

If there is one thing I don't like about being a writer in 2023, it's doing promotion. I didn't like it twenty years ago and I like it even less now.

Back then, before Amazon slayed the epublishers, if you had a good website, you did okay. Amazon is no one's friend. It exists to make money, plain and simple. Many, many, many voices have been silenced due to Amazon.

Yahoo used to have groups, as did MSN and Google. They're gone now and we're left with Facebook groups and other social media such as Twitter and YouTube. Doing promotion in the Facebook groups is like navigating several thousand landmine fields.

"Do this, don't do that! Can't you read the signs????"

Don't misunderstand me - there are myriad groups that are really great for promo. Post and go because an author's time is valuable, at least mine is.  Other groups have a lot of rules, which I add to my spreadsheet.

I've mentioned the FB spreadsheet before. It's full of KC shorthand, but it works. I know which book I've promoted and when. I know if it went into review, when it posted, and if it's still pending a month later.

Really, folks. If you're going to review each post, DO IT. My spreadsheet has five worksheets and one page is for groups I've abandoned like a hot potato because I don't have time for nonsense.

In the past week, I've moved ten groups to the abandoned worksheet. It'll save time in the long run. One group removed my first five promo posts but not the sixth (the first was in January so they were spread out). I don't care what the issue was. I simply cut the group out of my rotation.

It's not like I enjoy abandoning a particular group. Sure, the groups are full of other writers, but writers are readers, too. Between October and March, I read at least four books a week. April through September are the outdoor fun months, so I probably read four books a month. The point is, writers read.

And since writers read, I'll stick to posting in the groups that are truly writer-friendly. And on the social media formerly known as Twitter. And YouTube if I can get off my butt long enough to go make a video. Beyond that, I really must figure out what to do with Patreon. But I don't like the idea of having people pay for special treatment.

That's enough whining for today. Promotion needs to happen, but I don't have to enjoy it.

July 2023: My version of a newsletter for the month

August 3, 2023

We made it through July! It was a hot month here, but July always is. Historically, in my location, it is the hottest month of the year. We're suddenly into August, and like flipping a switch, it's cooler and a lot less humid. This year, I'm missing the yellow leaves that always began to fall off the big poplar tree that was just outside my sunroom office window. I could mark the first of August by the first leaves dropping. I miss the tree, but not the threat it posed to the house.

July was a big month tending the garden. Everything was growing and it was time to feed the plants, as well as water the plants every day. I was able to start harvesting tomatoes, but not the ones I'd hoped for. I planted seeds purporting to be Beefsteaks, but were cherry tomatoes instead. I wasn't pleased but I made use of them in pizza sauce.

I made good use of our little pool, too. Deuce enjoyed splashing around in his little pool for a couple of days, but then he lost interest in it. Thankfully, he abandoned it before I purchased him a larger pool.

The writing didn't go as well as I'd hoped, but it never does. It's a mystery how if I can type a solid 60 words per minute, I can't type 3600 words an hour. The math doesn't prove out! The upside is the current work-in-progress IS progressing and I did get the cover completed. I really need to expand my knowledge of the Photoshop program I have, but that takes time. I hope to have the "blurb" written soon and a book page posted.

One of the storefronts I use is now offering a service for book covers. I won't pay upwards of $100 for one cover and not have it be significantly better than what I can make, which they are not.

I spent waaaaay too much time on Twitter in July, so this month I'm on a bit of a Twitter... excuse me... X...holiday. I'll allow myself to check in once in the morning and once before I retire for the night. That should suffice. I didn't spend enough time on Facebook putting up promos. I doubt I'll do much better in August, but we'll see.

I'm actually going back to work soon. My replacement is expecting a baby in mid-September, and I'll be filling in for her while she's on maternity leave. I agreed to help on the condition I could do the bulk of the work at home. That was approved. I hope I'm not too rusty to actually be a help!

July flew by! I accomplished something every day even if I did jump from chore to chore and project to project like a squirrel. Life has taught me that sooner or later, it all gets done.

Here's to August! May we all stay safe and healthy!

When writing takes a back seat

 May 21, 2022

It's difficult to imagine I've been retired for a year! I'm actually between two anniversaries - the day I walked out the door for the last time on May 19, 2022, and the day of my retirement reception on May 22, 2022. It's been quite a year. Time has, as they say, flown by.

One of the major pillars of my retirement plan involved my writing career. I planned to set aside a block of time each day for writerly pursuits. It hasn't happened. I've been too busy.

Now don't scoff. Take a hop over to http://hollytreemanor.blogspot.com and catch up.

We have three beautiful acres to tend. My partner is in a wheelchair so "if it is to be, it is up to me." The responsibility for ninety-five percent of the home and garden chores is on my shoulders. I don't mind. I enjoy mowing, splitting wood, and other outdoorsy pursuits, but they do keep me from writing and blogging. I've been busy getting my little container garden planted, fertilized, and watered this time of year.

The spousal unit has "suggested" that I need to cease the attempt to complete every chore in just one day. He may be correct, but there is a lot to do and I prefer to do it before the heat of summer forces me inside. I know better than to do yardwork when the temperature gets above eighty degrees Fahrenheit. His heart may be in the right place, but I doubt it. He wants me to spend my days waiting on being with him and doing his projects.

I find myself doubting I have the discipline needed to get back to writing every day. Can I really set a cut-off time on my chores and come to the computer and write? Will I be able to concentrate on a story when there are chores left undone, or worse, only half done?

This retirement thing isn't quite what I thought it would be. Only half of my vision is in focus and I'm floundering. How do I bring clarity to the part of the plan that is writing?

I knew the first year of "retirement" would be transitional. I just didn't know it would be so hard on something I love so much.

Twelve years is a bit late to censor a post

April 20, 2023

Between the Moon and the Deep Blue Sea was first released in May 2011 at the now-defunct Amber Quill/Amber Allure publishing house. It was the third best-seller at the pub that month (brag, brag!). As one would expect, I promoted the hell out of it, posting it on every blog I had posting privileges. That was in 2011. Suddenly, in April 2023, I got a few notices from Google that the post didn't meet their "guidelines" and was under review.

Wow. Twelve years later.

I went back and took a look at the excerpt I used for promotion and decided Google had a problem with a couple "slang" words, namely that used to describe a bit of male anatomy and a common usage word to describe giving pleasure to that part of the anatomy by mouth. I made a few changes, clicked for a second review, and the posts were once again approved.

Wow. Twelve years. I wonder how many people saw all those posts? And I wonder what snowflake saw a post and complained. I mean, twelve years later.

I've written about censorship before. Censorship is a danger, a threat to all of us. If a powerful company is willing to censor my poor little romance novel, what else is it willing to censor? I fully expect THIS post to go up for review.

It may sound like a good thing to keep "adult" posts behind a content warning, but it's not. It's not my responsibility to parent YOUR children. The Internet/Interweb is a marvelous place, but it's also very adult in nature. YOU need to guide your children inside it, not me or any author.

Censorship blocks the sharing of free thinking. Free thinking is dangerous. Free thinking might have us planting a garden and growing some of our produce. Free thinking might have people reasoning out that when the nearest grocery store is an hour away, a short-range electric vehicle isn't practical. Free thinking might have some of us believe our daughter is really a biological female who will eventually choose to procreate, or not. Free thinking might have some of us believe that it's okay to accumulate enough wealth to support ourselves in retirement instead of having the State support us. Free thinking might have some of us believe that we have the right to defend ourselves under the Second Amendment.

Now, I realize that censoring my silly little post is nothing in the overall larger scheme of things, but that's the insidious nature of censorship. It starts small and chips away, chips away, chips away at all the little things until suddenly what has been lost is a big thing.

We need to be on guard. We need to stay diligent. We need to be able to recognize how censorship attempts to shepherd us into having only one choice, and one voice. As an author, as an America, I believe in the First Amendment and the guarantee of free speech, of which writing is a form.

Opposing views and free speech are necessary to a free people. It's a lot more important issue than slang words in a romance novel, but I recognize it as just the beginning.

If they have eyes, let them see.

The things that matter

March 4, 2023

This meme popped up in my Twitter feed and I read it and moved on. Then I went back for it. I guess the morning coffee hadn't kicked in the first time.

Twitter is one of my guilty pleasures. Yes, most days there is a lot of crap to hop over, but little jewels like this one do exist.

To phrase it another way, stop doing the things that don't matter (first) so you have time to do the things that do matter.

In order to stop focusing on the things that don't matter, we must first identify them. Why are we taking out the trash instead of writing? It could be the trash truck is a mere three houses away and we'd better hurry. It could be the trash truck won't pick up until tomorrow. Prioritizing isn't easy. Overcoming our (possibly) brainwashed way of doing things isn't easy.

As I prepared for retirement, I got a letter-sized desk calendar. It's a Day Designer that has a page for every day. The days have sections for Schedule, Today's Top Three, To-Do, and Notes, plus an inspirational saying. There are two small sections at the bottom for Tonight and for Gratitude. It's been a big help to me to be able to look at what I've done during the day and see areas I want to improve. I'm not strict enough with my time.

I've embraced "retirement" and enjoy time spent with the Lord of the Manor doing not much of anything. He spent a lot of time alone in the last thirty years while I was at work. Setting aside what I'm working on to spend time with him when he is taking a break is something that matters to me even though it doesn't show on my desk calendar as productivity. Do I need to be a productive writer every free moment of the day?

Perhaps not, but I need to be cognizant of my use of time. It's time to use that desk calendar a little more proactively. That "Today's Top Three" block needs to be used to identify the things that matter, like time with loved ones.

The night the Internet died

February 4, 2023

Oh, my Lord was last night no fun at all. Have you EVER been cooped up after dark on a cold and windy night with a grumpy old man whose Internet streaming has failed? You do not want to go there.

You.
Do.
Not.
Want.
To.
Go.
There.

In a word, it was awful. We lost everything. No Internet. No streaming. But there was screaming! And wailing! No, it wasn't me. I landed in front of my computer and worked on the current WIP. In other words, I hid in my office.

We knew something was going on when the movie we were watching started to buffer. That hasn't happened in several years. A few years ago we had a neighbor who is a technician at our local cable company. When he moved in up here on the mountain, the cable company needed to run a line to him. Ha. Ha. They couldn't do that without crossing my right of way through my cousin's property. We struck a deal. They could cross my cousin's property and my lane to the box if they ran a cable to us at no charge. My cousin and I were rather happy with the deal because it would have cost each of us, especially me, a bundle to have the cable buried. Anyway, it's been a good installation until last night, outside of a few storms that were beyond their control.

No cable put Himself in a really bad place. He called the cable company and they said they couldn't send any out until Monday afternoon. BOOM! His head exploded. The man was snorting for hours. Finally, it got late enough for me to go to bed and escape the grumbling.

First thing this morning, he was on the phone again. Only this time, I think the tech that took his call was our old neighbor. Unlike the so-called tech on Friday night, our Saturday morning guy fixed us up in about twenty minutes. We don't know what commands he gave his computer but we know it worked. He had us up and running with an apology that we'd had any problem.

I'd like to say I'm not pissed off at the Friday night guy, but that would be untrue. That he didn't give a fuck is obvious. He didn't even try to look into the problem. He simply passed it on to someone else. Why would he need to waste his time on an old couple? I tell myself to be patient, tolerant and accepting, and then something like this happens.

Maybe we aren't the ones who need an attitude adjustment. Just saying.
