The Road Less Taken - Robert Frost

October 23, 2013

I have always loved The Road Less Taken by Robert Frost. Like the fellow in the poem, I find a long walk through the woods both invigorating and peaceful. I'm fortunate to live in a rural area surrounded by woods. I can choose a path for a morning walk and know mine are first feet to travel the road that day.

The autumn colors are slow in arriving this year, but by Saturday I expect to be able to walk the old paths and enjoy the fall woods. If I don't do it this coming weekend, I may have to wait a year. And like the poet, I may never pass this way again so now is the time.

Here's my favorite poem. Enjoy!

The Road Less Taken - Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

The Red-tailed Hawk

October 22, 2013

I'm thinking about birds today. I'm sure it has something to do with the Hitchcockian line-up of little brown sparrows perched on the telephone lines outside my office window. An old friend had a little green Quaker parrot named Calvin and he acted as if there was some sort of intelligence at work. I used to joke about this bird knowing he was descended from avian theropods. Perhaps the birds on the wire know it as well.

Seeing the birds outside led me to ponder the feathered situation at home. We have a Red-tailed hawk in the sky above our house, and for the first time in ten years my not-so-silly cat is very cautious when he ventures out to search for his own prey.

I'm not at all sure the hawk is big enough [yet] to take on a fifteen-pound cat, especially one which is all mountain-cat muscle. There's no city-cat flab on my kitty-precious. Nonetheless, the cat's instincts rule him in this and I'm fine with that.

As a girl, I helped my grandfather make bird feeders, and tossed sunflower seeds out the kitchen window with my grandmother for the Bob-whites on the ground. I'm sometimes surprised at what birds I remember and know by sight from their teachings. Cardinals, Baltimore Orioles, Indigo Buntings, Nuthatch, Chickadee, blackbirds, crows, common sparrows, finches, wrens, titmouse, Juncos, jays, mockingbirds, catbirds and the occasional Ring-necked pheasant all visited the area outside my grandparent's kitchen windows. If you saw a hawk show up, it was like magic. "poof!" The little birds vanished.

These days the quail have disappeared, by what mechanism I don't know. I don't even hear them call in the distance much less see one. Instead we have wild turkeys, something I never saw until they made a resurgence in the mid-1990s. Now, with the hawk, I suspect I won't have many small birds to feed this winter. They, like the cat, know when to keep out of sight.

I suppose I could find it in me to be annoyed at the hawk, but I'm not. The old and the frail will fall to him and I view it as a quicker death than starvation or freezing on the first really cold night of the season. Maybe it's because I grew up understanding there is a natural order to everything - Nature does not waste life.

The hawk will eventually move on, following the small birds. The little ones will return to refill the vacuum. But in the meantime I will watch this young Red-tailed and admire his seemingly wise gaze as he perches on the old cherry stump. After all, he is the ranking dinosaur in the neighborhood.

Station to Station - My Sexy Saturday blog

October 19, 2013
**Updated 4/2/21 - the My Sexy Saturday blog hop has been discontinued.**

Welcome to week #21 of My Sexy Saturday. I'm a newer arrival to this weekly blog hop and I must say I'm enjoying it. It's introduced me to some new authors and expanded my circle in a very good way. Connecting with other writers isn't always easy even in this day of social media. Not meeting face-to-face changes the ways we make friends. It's not bad, just different. We're more open, and more cautious, all at the same time but it works.

This week, I'm showcasing seven paragraphs from Station to Station. Station to Station is set to release this weekend - yea! - so depending on when you read this, you may have to check back if you want a copy. (Update: Station to Station is now available.)

Station to Station is the seventh book in the Men of Marionville series. It had been a while since I visited Marionville and, well, I missed everyone so I decided to pick up the series again. So without further ado, here's seven sexy paragraphs from Station to Station.

==================
“My room is two blocks from here, Scott. Whataya say?”
My resolve to keep stupidity at bay wavered. Hell, it crumbled, and I was about to tread over the broken pieces of it on my way out the door to his place.
The letters awarding the bids were already in sealed envelopes in a locked drawer in the mayor’s office. How much flak could there be if someone found out Dakota and I had a little tryst? I nodded and saw victory flash in his eyes. I downed the last of my lukewarm coffee and pushed back from the table. “Let’s go.”
Dakota rose in an easy, unhurried motion and dropped a five-dollar bill on the table for a tip. “I like a man full of surprises.”
I’m not sure I did when I was that man. I motioned at the exit. “Lead on.”
Instead of heading out, he stepped in front of me and cupped the back of my neck. His mouth covered mine, and my skin heated in a wave. I licked his lips and they opened to me. His silky tongue slid over mine, and my cock swelled to an aching fullness in three throbbing heartbeats. My hands went to his hips, then I pulled him tight against me to let him feel how hard I was for him, but also to know if he was hard for me. His lips bowed under mine as he ended the kiss and rested his forehead to mine.
“That’s for you.”

Strange days have found us

October 16, 2013

Strange days have found us
Strange days have tracked us down
They're going to destroy
Our casual joys
We shall go on playing
Or find a new town.

As a general rule, Strange Days is not my favorite song by The Doors, my fave being Light My Fire. Back in the day when radio station 105.9 WCRX went live as the area’s first classic rock station their debut song was Light My Fire by The Doors.  I was really bummed when the station flipped over to “smooth jazz” but it wasn’t all bad so I still tuned in occasionally. At least I did until they went to a talk format and I found another station I like, that being 106.9 The Eagle. (Okay, guys - gimme something free for the plug!)

On the drive to work recently, the song Strange Days by The Doors aired and I haven’t been able to get it out of my mind. I suppose it resonated this time due to changes at my place of employment. Yes, strange days, or at least forty strange hours a week, have come to my world.

Changes in the workplace are nothing new. We all experience them and we all live through it. How we come out the other side varies. Stress can be a killer, this we know, but it can also change a person’s view of the world. Perhaps that’s the more damaging.

For myself, I got a wakeup call last night when I realized the situation at the day job had me too mentally exhausted to settle down and write. That’s when the words to the song really took hold.

“They’re going to destroy our casual joys…”

The words are something to think about.  This morning I’m better rested and much clearer. Perhaps it’s time to institute my own “strange days.” It’s time to stop being nice and agreeing to those things that are not my responsibility. Who I become in the forty hours a week I give to an employer is not who I really am. They pay for my time and talents, not my soul.

It’s time to step back and realign my priorities, those being home and hearth and everything encompassed there. And having learned other lessons, I’ll do it all with a smile. I expect it will surprise a few people when they figure out they’ve actually been forced to do their own work.

Strange days, indeed.

My Sexy Saturday - The Back Stairs by KC Kendricks

October 12, 2013
**Updated 4/2/21 - the My Sexy Saturday blog hop has been discontinued.**

October is the perfect time for shapeshifters. And not just any shapeshifter, either. Sundown's people came from another world and walk among us undetected. Then Sundown meets Fallon, a cop, and takes a chance on having his true nature discovered. It goes against everything Sundown knows but he thinks Fallon is worth the risk. But first he has to convince Fallon he's not a male hooker - or a killer. Here's seven paragraphs from The Back Stairs, book one of the Sundown series.

*_*_*_*

What the hell was I doing? What if he were Internal Affairs working an undercover sting? Juny and I were not department favorites. We were more concerned with catching the bad guys than playing office politics. Sundown’s spooky green eyes sparkled with desire – and amusement.

“You’re very well hung, Lieutenant Roxbury.”

I snorted. “I thank my parents, every day, for such good genes.”

He stretched his hand over my full length, thumb at the base of my penis, his little finger extending past the tip. The little rip was measuring me. I wished he’d hurry up before I couldn’t wait any longer and took things into my own hands. Uneasy, I needed to get off and get out of here. Sundown batted his eyelashes at me.

“I like eight inch cocks. They’re perfect.”

“That’s eight and three-eights inches, if you please. It might even be all the way to eight and a half right now, so don’t shortchange me. And stop acting all coy and shy.”

“Please, Fallon. Let down your guard. What happens between us goes no further than these walls.”

My Sexy Saturday - Doors of Time by KC Kendricks

October 5, 2013
**Updated 4/2/21 - the My Sexy Saturday blog hop has been discontinued.**

Welcome to My Sexy Saturday! My Sexy Saturday is a blog hop where your fave authors present seven sexy words, seven sexy paragraphs or even seven sexy pages from a published book or a work in progress.

This week I have seven sexy paragraphs from Doors of Time. As teens, Calvin didn't confess to Emory he had feelings for him so Emory always believed Calvin was straight. This conversation takes place after Calvin tells Emory the truth. You can read more of it here.  Enjoy!

_*_*_
“As a younger man, I seemed to attract a macho element intent on making me their bitch.” Emory looked at him and lifted his hands, palms up. “And there you sit, only gay for a few hours.”

Calvin snorted. “Disconcerting, isn’t it?”

“You don’t know the half of it. I mean, I tell you you’re dessert and that makes you decide to have dinner with me?”

Calvin parked the car beside Emory’s little sports coupe. “I was leaning toward dinner without dessert, but your way sounds more interesting.”

Emory scrambled from the car as he reached for the door handle. “I’ll leave your name at the front desk.”

Calvin hurried after him and blocked his escape into his own ride. “Wait a second! What are you scared of, Emory?"

"Feeling sixteen and clueless again."

Visiting the park on lunch break

October 2, 2013

I work in a growing town with a population approaching 50,000 souls. The community has its share of problems, same as all small towns losing their small town identity as they grow. One thing the town hasn't forfeited is its historic parks.

Over my lunch hour, I visited one of the oldest parks for some fresh air and a twenty-minute walk to shake off a morning stuck behind a desk. With autumn upon us, the number of lovely days left in this calendar year are dwindling.

Anyway, I wanted to share a photo of this park still decked out in summer greens although it's evident autumn color is poised to arrive.

My Sexy Saturday - Kentucky 98 Proof

September 28, 2013
**updated 4/2/21 - the My Sexy Saturday blog hop is no longer operational**

Happy My Sexy Saturday, the first one of autumn! Thanks for stopping by Between the Keys. This week, I'm posting seven (short) paragraphs from Kentucky 98 Proof you won't find anywhere else on the Internet. The action takes place as Vic is taking a bath to get ready for his first official date with Boone. (Ranger is Vic's dog.) Enjoy!
_*_*_*_

Ranger padded out of the bathroom, toenails clicking softly on the oak floor. Vic pulled his knees to his chest, held his breath, and slid under the water. He could almost float in the tub. He sat up, wiped the water from his eyes, and glared up at the tall man leaning on the door frame.

“You’re early.”

“You’re not ready.” Boone raised an eyebrow. “But since you’re naked I don’t think I mind much.”

“The washcloth has me covered.”

“Damn. That must be disappointing.”

"It's a big washcloth."

Boone snorted. "Wouldn't cover me."

Title, title....what should be the title?

September 27, 2013

One of the things I like about Amber Quill/Amber Allure (please note this company closed March 30, 2016) is the opportunity to take two or three stories and publish them in a paperback anthology. And while the demand for paperbacks is currently not what it once was, I think it's great to have a printed copy or two on my personal bookshelf. Yes, it's a vanity thing, but I don't care what society says, we're all entitled to some minor vanities every now and then.

So that brings me around to having to fill out one of those *(;^!%(*! publisher forms. Not my favorite thing to do. (I don't know any author who leaps at the chance to fill out the forms so I'm not alone.) I've known since I was halfway through writing Kentucky 98 Proof it would probably go into an anthology with Doors of Time. What's the hold up you ask? Why do I seem to be dragging my feet? Ready for some bad grammar? I don't got no title.

Usually, it's easy to come up with a title for a compilation. What You Don't Confess and Your Whisper in the Dark became Whispered Confessions.  Double Deuce and Deuce of Diamonds became Double Diamonds. Between the Moon and the Deep Blue Sea and Catching Fireflies became Catch the Moon. You see the pattern. But for the life of me I can't seem to hit on a combination I like for Kentucky 98 Proof and Doors of Time.

Door to Kentucky? Kentucky Time? Proof of Time? Door Proof? 98 Doors? You see the problem. Nothing sounds quite right. I have a sheet of possibilities, all titles I've thought up over the years for stories but not chosen and nothing on the list strikes a chord in me either. I love both those stories and I want a hard copy on my shelf, darn it!

Settling on a title is at the top of my list for this weekend. Will I get to scratch it off the list? Stay tuned. I'll let ya know.

**When Amber Quill closed in 2016 all the paperbacks went out of print.**

Live, learn, improve

September 23, 2013

A little over a week ago I stumbled upon the My Sexy Saturday blog hop. Now I love simple to the inth degree so I signed up, and I'll probably continue to do so for the near future. It's fun going around to the different blogs and seeing what everyone else is working on AND finding some great new-to-me authors. That's the up side. The down side is boy did I discover I'd made a huge mistake by omission on my blog.

Of all the incredibly stupid things to not do, I didn't have my name at the top of my blog. Okay it was one tiny scroll down the page, but I know better! Heck, when you go to my website my name jumps off the page at you.

And even worse, I didn't realize this until I clicked onto another author's website and had to search to see whose site it was. That's when it hit me. I needed a simple block at the top of the blog with a welcome. You know, you are here and here is at KC Kendricks' Between the Keys. Simple.

On my travels to the other My Sexy Saturday blogs I noticed so many things I really liked. There are a lot of really creative people at there. I like the look of Between the Keys so I don't know how many of those ideas I can build on, but there may be a few.

Live, learn, improve. That's just the way it is.

My Sexy Saturday - Desert Snow by KC Kendricks

September 21, 2013
**updated 4/2/21 - The My Sexy Saturday blog hop is no longer operating**

Welcome to the My Sexy Saturday blog hop! I'd like to thank everyone for the warm welcome last Saturday. I'm looking forward to making my way around to everyone's blog and Twitter feeds. (Follow the #mysexysaturday on Twitter.)

My Sexy Saturday is easy. Each author selects seven words, sentences or paragraphs from one of his/her books, and posts it on Saturday morning. Then everyone can hop around the blogs and check them out.

This week I've chosen seven sentences from Desert Snow. Enjoy!

His gaze flicked to my lips as I licked the tart drops.
“I wouldn’t want to come across as easy.”

His left eyebrow lifted. “Not a word I’d use to describe my take on you. I think I’ll get a few more drinks into you and see if you’re more agreeable to some fun.”

I grinned at him. “You give a guy my age too many drinks and the only fun you’ll get will be listening to him snore.”

Why else set up his business meeting in Palm Springs the week of the annual White Party and ask Laird to go along? Laird goes with every intention of enjoying the eye candy, the weather, and behaving himself. Those plans change his first night out while waiting to cross the street and a younger man in white leather greets him.

Haydn Rinehart is at a crossroads. His pilgrimage to the White Party is to keep a promise before moving into the next phase of his life. Haydn strikes up a conversation with an attractive party-goer while waiting for a traffic light to change and invites him for a drink. When he discovers Laird is one of his favorite authors, Haydn volunteers to assist in some hands-on research in his hotel room.

After all, they are at the White Party and some fun is in order.

It was a long time coming

September 17, 2013

Five years ago I rolled the dice and submitted a contemporary gay romance in the 2008 Amber Heat Wave Contest. I figured I had nothing to lose. The congratulatory email came - Surrendered Victory was one of the winners. I was off and running.

Since then I've published thirty books, most of which placed on the monthly Amber Allure Bestseller list. But I didn't have a number one until now.

Yep. That's #1.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

We drank the whole thing!

September 16, 2013

For the record, I am not a lush. I just enjoy a glass of wine from time-to-time. Recently I posted about our road trip to some Maryland wineries and the purchases we made. This is a follow-up to that blog. Yes, we guzzled enjoyed the whole bottle. It was only two big glasses each.

This past weekend started off like many others. I was up early, writing, and after a sufficient amount of daylight infiltrated the bedroom, Himself shuffled to the coffee maker and then to his chair. After he'd had a chance to get his eyes open, I joined him.

We putzed around the house and yard for awhile but in due course, it had to happen. Someone had to say the words.

"What are we going to do today?" can be almost the most annoying words in the English language after "What's for supper?".

We decided to make lasagna. It's a great cook-once-and-eat-four-times plan and the first plating calls for a good wine. We consulted the wine rack and decided, by default, to pop the cork on the Elk Run Annapolis Sunset. I say by default because we didn't have Merlot. But hey - it worked!

And it was sooooooo good. And for us, that's what makes the wine. We don't care about awards and critical acclaim, we go for the taste.

Light and slightly sweet, Annapolis Sunset is definitely on our "buy again" list. It's perfect for supper on the patio on a crisp September evening. Give it a try if you get the chance.
